How Many Miles between Tranny/TransCase/F&R Diff Oil Changes?

I last changed the oil in the drive train about 18K miles ago. Can't find anything in the Owner's Manual that tells me when to change the oil. Can somebody point me in the right direction?

I was told that the U-joints in the drive shafts should be greased every 5K miles. Is that true? I've never heard of greasing them that often.

 

Zerks, do them every oil change or every other oil change.

You've seen the carnage of running them dry, plenty of threads posted on it.

Transmission, diffs, transfer case, that's all dependent on - the owner, use of the vehicle, etc.

Some people Sunday drive their vehicle, others wheel a lot, some just thrash them and they're ranch or hunting rigs, and some just daily them on paved roads.

So you're kind of asking a question that'll lead to many different answers based on many variables not mentioned.

 

30-50k on the diffs transfer and trans when using good full synthetic fluids is about what I do unless I think I got water in a diff.

5k for the drive shaft is about right, I grease every time I do an oil change.

 

Well I don't know where my head's been over the last 30 years, as far as greasing the U-joints go, that is. Prolly up where the sun don't shine...
With respect to the fluids...

- The truck has 110,000 miles on it and is garaged 95% of the time.

- I only take the truck out for more than 10 miles 2 or 3 times a year, and most of that is on the interstate and state highways in Nevada and Utah.

- During those pre- and post-season trips, I take the truck on some pretty knarly roads during those trips in and around Canyonlands and the mountains in eastern Nevada and Utah.

Sure seems like changing the tranny/trans case/differentials is a 30,000-mile job, but with my mind slowly dissolving to powder, I could be wrong.

In any case, I'll crawl under the truck and lube the U-joints though before taking it out again.

I change the transmission fluid every other oil change. Not a full flush but drain and replace the pan fluid which is about 4-5qts.

Toyota keeps the intervals in a warranty & maintenance booklet separate from the owner's manual. You can download the booklet from Toyota.Com if you lost yours.

These are the intervals I use, daily commuter & off-roading several times a year through water and mud up to the doorsills.

Drivetrain every 3 yrs or 30k
Transmission every 5 yrs or 50k
Driveshaft grease every 1 yr or 10k
