I was walking through a neighborhood with some folks and a TRX was driving by and I commented that it was a TRX and you don't see them very often. They asked why and I said because they are typically $100k+. Of course a series of questions came as to why. Can it tow more, does it get better gas mileage, etc. Long story short, the conversation came down to why someone would buy that truck for $100k+ over another truck that basically does the same thing. and most of my answers were simply "I don't know."

This question is a little more general than your statement, but why do I always here that only a small percentage of people with trucks off-road or tow? Is there any data on that whatsoever?

From an offroad perspective, I've been on most trails in Colorado (non-buggy) and Moab and 99% of the vehicles are not full-size trucks nor are they usually trucks. Mostly Jeeps or really old 4runners and stuff. My 3rd gen is usually the ONLY semi-new vehicle on a trail. When I ran Pritchett Canyon, I saw maybe 50 vehicles, all old and beat up or Jeeps. Now the group I go with wheel with 4 linked Suburban on 40s and an SAS'd Tahoe but both vehicles are smashed to bits, one even did a body swap. So most people are not offroading their trucks much less newer ones.

From a towing perspective, I have a lot of friends who own trucks for the sake of owning a truck, they never tow and didnt buy a fullsize to tow, they just like the room. The other perspective is that many people tow because they own a boat or a camper but they only tow those things a couple days a year so the truck spends 90% of it's time not hauling or towing and 99% of its time not offroad.

From a comparative perspective, how many trucks do you see on the road towing vs not, and then compare that to how many semis you seeing towing versus not.

The answer to that question is as simple as “because they can.” Most people will never understand that kind of life.

Ya I came to that conclusion as well but a lot of people regardless of how rich or poor they are dont align/understand to that logic.

Then you don't know enough really wealthy people. Most everything that they spend their money on is mainly because they can. Houses, vehicles, travel, etc. Most even have to spend it as not to lose even more money by not spending it.

Same with the Santa Cruz. I have been seeing them quite a bit lately and am starting to like them. It would be fine for 95% of my driving.

I don't think its a matter of knowing enough people. The neighborhood I am walking through are 50 acre horse ranches that sell for $5-10 million, the TRX was driven by a neighbor. As mentioned by others there are millionaires that drive 10 year old Camrys.

It just comes down to buying something because thats what you want but people will never understand why, we want to understand but never will.

Still this is very subjective. I have a place in NM and I see plenty of full size trucks offroading or beat to death from it. They're enormous, so you won't see many on narrow mountain trails. F150 wasn't bad on sand, since it is less than 700lb than a midsize.

And then I spend another half of the year in the midwest where the interstates is packed with trucks towing, and the suburbs have horse, travel, flatbed, etc trailers parked on there property.

Personally until I see actual data, gotta dismiss these claims

The extent of use of a bed for many truck owners are buying 6 bags of mulch at Home Depot each spring and buying an Xmas tree each year. :)

That's basically a negative proof. You'll never see empircal data on it because no one would waste their time doing a study like that. But its pretty common sense if you just look around.

Even to your point, you admit that you see trailers and stuff "parked" on property. To my point people have these thigns but that doesn't mean they use their truck primarily for towing.

You missed before parked I said the interstate is packed with people towing. Every single person in my family with a truck spends a good amount of time towing, and most of us off-road. I'm not saying your wrong, but my observation is just as valid.

Only an idiot would choose to daily drive a full size pickup and never use it as a truck. Nothing worse than trying to park in a busy city

We’re talking about two different levels of wealthy. 5-10 million isn’t what i meant by really wealthy. Sorry.

Yep, lots of people like that. I bought mine from a volume sales dealer at $10k under MSRP at the time the order was placed. When the truck was finally delivered it came in at $12k under the current MSRP out the door so only $76k. My choice was relatively simple for the truck as I needed a truck to get off-road, haul and tow stuff and also wanted a sports car but don’t have room for both. A TRX fits the bill pretty well in that regard as would a Rivian.

I would agree that you'll see a lot of trucks towing on the interstate, makes sense because in those situations people are often pulling a boat or camper but you equally see a lot of trucks not towing. It's more prevalent in cities, suburbs, etc where we see trucks not towing, again more densely populated areas.

Moab has full-size invasion but again how many of those trucks are new or primary vehicles? Again most people dont offroad their trucks, that statement implies a primary vehicle. even the fullsize trucks that I wheel with are towed by other trucks, those other trucks spend most of their time not towing.

As far as "only an idiot would choose to daily a full-size" thats EXACTLY what most truck owners do, you dont think the F150 is the best selling truck in America because of towing do you?

Eh well probably shoulders I wouldnt waste my time rubbing against. People that are THAT wealthy aren't buying Rivians and TRX's they are buying planes and yachts and islands.

I downsized to a Tacoma because I'm only towing an 18ft trailer and I just want reliability, but hell yeah I do. The F150 tows great, 10X better than a Tacoma. Do you have any idea how many trailers and boats are sold each year? I have no idea either but I bet it's a shit ton

That’s fair, & that’s your personal choice. Also, those plane & yacht people still have & want cars too. But you’re right, probably not a Rivian, lol.
