Does the 2022 Tacoma have the auto on and off switch for the engine? When you pull up to a stop the engine shuts off and when you push on the accelerator pedal the engine starts back up.

Great. I hate that feature. It is a pain in the ass. I have it on my 2020 Explorer ST. I disabled it.

Not on my 22 Tacoma, the wife has it on her 20 RAV4. I’m not a big fan of it as well

it's always weird when i hear someone starting their engine at a stop light. can't imagine it saves much fuel. just seems like it would terrible for the engine and hard on the starter.

Whatever miniscule amount of gas it saves is probably eaten up in batteries and starters.

I had an F150 with auto start stop. It had a button to turn it off. It became muscle memory. But some vehicles don't even have a way to turn it off. I would never buy one. There's no way that's not shortening the life of the engine by a lot

In real-world tests it seems to improve MPG by 0-10% depending on conditions. It's primarily added to US cars to get a better EPA rating.

As much as i hate start stop technology it does actually save a bit of gas especially when you multiply that by the millions of vehicles that have it. My 2018 Wrangler had it and the secondary 12v battery died after 4 months of ownership and it unfortunately couldn't be jumped using a high powered jumper that ive used on multiple V8s and had to be towed to the dealer to be replaced. This happened 2 days after a solo trip to Valley of the Gods UT which is one of the reasons i finally made the switch to a Tacoma as i often travel solo to really remote destinations and didnt want to risk being stranded

The worst thing you do to your engine is start it, being turned over by the starters uneven torque, as opposed to all cylinders firing and pushing the crank around. Then the oil is already draining back into the pan. Worse thing you do your engine…..

If the US was serious about saving fuel they would do away with most stop lights and install round-a-bouts instead. So much more efficient at keeping traffic flowing and also helps with safety by limiting big clusters of cars that inevitably build up at a red light. After living in the UK for 7 years and coming back here I couldn't believe how long it took me to get anywhere in town.

Driving essentially became a right here, not a privilege, so we have to share the road with un/underinsured, uneducated, disrespectful, distracted heathens, so the expectations are at an all time low. I’d think a circley-thingy would just way above many’s capacity.

I remember my trip to Ireland. The car I rented was manual and I kept thinking I stalled it because of the auto start. Found the button, shut it off for the rest of the trip.

Agreed. And the moment you shut down an engine, it starts cooling. Heat cycles contribute to metal fatigue. For what ever fuel is saved, or carbon emissions suppressed, I find it hard to believe there is a net positive. How many starters and exhaust manifolds will end up in landfills to save a few gallons of gas ?
Wish I could converse with someone in the know and unbiased about this stuff. Recently had an engineer from rotax aircraft engines who had previously worked with Mazda tell me most of what is going on with engine development these days is complete bs. He claimed that vvt, direct injection, etc. are more related to emission standards than efficiency and that engines can be built without all that crap to the point they produce less emissions per horsepower due to a more efficient design. I’m inclined to believe it based on comparison of some aircraft engines to something like a Honda vtec in terms of bsfc.

I got so angry at the stop/start function in the Jeep I drove for my previous job that I went under the hood and pulled out the sensor that tells the car when the hood is closed. For whatever reason, this has the effect of of disabling stop/start permanently unless its reconnected, and having a light on the dash was far better than having the car turn off my AC and heater constantly when stopping. This was necessary because while you could turn the stop/start off, it would reset itself and turn on again when you restarted the car from it being turned off, so you could never actually keep stop/start off unless you hit the button every time you got in and started the engine.

A particularly dumb part of stop/start I also found was that when I would pull up to park, it would turn the engine off when it sensed the car stop, thinking I was at a stoplight. Then turn the engine back on when I put the car in park if and foot came off the brake. So parking involved turning off twice and restarting once unless you followed a very specific sequence of control inputs every time. Needless to say this was also quite annoying off road on the back trails I drove for work. All fo this would have been solved if the system could be kept off permanently and turned on when desired.

You're not wrong but it would surprise you to know how much time, work and money is involved in converting an existing stoplight intersection to a round a bout. They are a major pain in the ass to construct.

It reads that way doesn’t it? about the on off switch. This boomer bought a well used ex Hertz 07 rental Prius from San Francisco, surely it was treated with loving care but it had that on off feature associated with the hybrid drive and we racked up 100k miles adding to the 204k it had when we bought it. One of the cells went south in the big traction battery at around 280k got a replacement for about 100 dollars. That newfangled technology sure is a MF we ought to rip that shit off and slap a carburetor on it. That bad old on off switch never gave us a problem.
