Extending new bilsteins to replace rear shocks

So I purchased some new 4600s to replace my rear shocks and I cannot get either one of them to extend. I have put breaker bars thru the eyes and stood on the lower an tried to pull up with the upper an not even a slight hint of budging. Any tips for how to get these things extended so I can install them?

 

Sounds like you purchased the wrong shocks

 

Part numbers were checked on numerous sites and calls to local dealers.

 

There’s no trick to rear shocks, they either fit or they dont. Put them next to each other one old one new, are they the same length? Or close

 

What is their length from eye to eye? And how much shaft is showing?

 

The passenger side is 22in eye to eye with about 9 1/4 in of the shaft out measuring inside the cover

 

I am def aware its not the right part but I cannot find another number for my 99 anywhere I have looked it up

 

5 minute job, just put the bolts on and torque to spec.

A quick search yields the correct shock part number and technical specifications IE lengths both extended and collapsed.

The shocks, without any weight on them, are already in their extended position. Extending them further will only damage them.

 

Hmmmmmm very strange those are the ones I have but the shocks on my 99 the rear right is quite a bit longer then the rear left.

 

"Quite a bit longer" is rather vague.

And unless you're the original owner, it's hard to figure out what you removed without the parts themselves having an inscribed part number.

I tend to ignore removed parts and simply install correct parts.

 

I can't tell from the OP if the shocks are stuck fully compressed or if you're trying to extend them further than they're designed to be extended.

Giving you the benefit of the doubt.. is the truck jacked up funky with one side of the axle higher than the other or is there any type of spacer to make one side taller than the other? Any possibility you received 2 different shocks?

Compare the new shocks vs the factory ones side by side and see what the length difference is.

 

let's triple check then. What were the part numbers purchased and what are the details of your truck? Also, you're saying the shocks do not extend, do they collapse?

edit: also, are you trying to install them with the axle completely drooped out? Sometimes, the travel of stock leaf springs can exceed that of shocks when everything is jacked up and left to hang

 

Yeah the ones on the truck are Toyota parts....have not removed them to see the part had Toyota put them on several years ago. The exact difference in length I will have to measure but bottom line is the link you provided an all the sites I have checked are listing those numbers but there is no way they are gonna fit on my truck. Was assuming the rear shocks would mount the same on all 99 SR5s and you can see by looking that the passenger side shock is certainly longer than the drivers side. Gonna have to pull them an get the numbers off of them an see what I can find to match I guess.

 

His truck is a '99, and you're in the 1st Gen section.

Assuming he removed factory shocks is a stretch. You'd have to assume he is the original owner and the rear shocks were never replaced which would make the shocks 18 years past due.

The difference in length between the 2 is 1/2 inch. Yes they will compress an thats why I have to assume its not a faulty shock but certainly not going to fit.

 

and you are trying to install them with the axle supported or with the axle hanging in the air?

Post a picture of the part numbers of your new shocks.

Post a picture of your old shocks next to your new shocks.

Post a picture of your truck's current position as you attempt to install the new shocks.

 

They are not original but they are Toyota made parts that were put on by the dealership in 2015

 

TRD Tacoma's had yellow Bilsteins, but they weren't exactly 4600s that are offered today.

The 4600s purchased (and linked above) actually have a slightly larger diameter body.

Original shocks would've been physically skinnier.

 

This this this. So install the top part of shock with part number 24-184960 on the driver's side of the truck and then take a photo. Include the shock, mounting points, and leaf springs in the photo.
