Took my first longer trip in my new 2.7 and meh, I had popped on AT tires 265/75-16 and expected them to affect the 4.30 geared performance but not this much.

Im locking it out of 6th gear on the highways and its still hunting gears too much. Keeping it between 60-70 MPH indicated it will drop to fourth on the slightest grade, and third when on CC. If Im operating the pedal I can keep it in 5th almost always.

So had a 14 5lug 2.7 M5, 31" tires and had 4.88s which I liked. Cant imagine Id need +5.XX with the auto but IDK. So, anyone running close to this gear/tire? I dont go over 70, usually shoot for about 65/67 MPH.

Was prob going to try another LCE header, and Im guessing theres no tuner for the 2.7 by the searches Ive tried... Thanks for opinions and advice.

No tuna? No 5.XX? No, 6th will never be useful?

    Ha, jk

I don’t think I have come across a tune for the 4. I am not sure about gearing. The tire your running, 31’ isn’t that big. But I am not an expert. Others stopping will know more.

Yeah Im thinking gears will be a sure thing as I just drove about 1400 highway miles and I doubt it was in 6th more than a single friggin mile of all of it. Im not heavily loaded or pulling a trailer either.

Did you ever take a trip with the OE tires? Just wondering if the tires are really that much of the problem.

I'd bet not, especially if the OE tires are close-ish in sizing.

A flat 3 hour ride each way but in Florida, it was fine, 27 MPG too, but zero elevation, I didnt even go on an overpass. Lol. It sits about an inch higher with the 265s. Heading up I95 it was totally different. 2000 RPM bouncing down gears to +4000 RPM, up n down gears over n over every few seconds on any slight grade. I finally gave up on 6th gear.

Im thinking 5.29 now. This is 4.88 on the left, 5.29 on the right. I never go over 70 and I will pull trailers now n then.

Took my 1200 mile ride home and yeah, 6th is useless with 4.30 and 31.6" tires. 5th is close to useless too, with the slightest grade on an overpass forcing a downshift to 4th or even 3rd which is up from 1900 to a rude 4800 RPM while it wails away... up/down/up/double down over n over.

So decided to order a third built, ECGS and I talked ratios again, so its getting a 5.29 with a Detroit Tru track posi. Playing with gear calcs thats where I want to be, and especially considering downshifts.

Drove her locally today locked in 4th as max gear, up to 60 its great. And at 49 MPH and about 2400 RPM, a grade doesn't force a down shift, which I hope keeps me at highway speeds in 6-5th gears. Im thinking at 65/70 I can hold 6th up most grades on I-95 for example. (Im an East Coaster). And pulling a few trailers the lower gear vs 4.88 plus my eventual even taller 235/85-16" (which were not available this tire purchase) should be well within my desired results.

    Maybe. Hahaha.

I will follow up in a month or so when it's built/delivered/installed.

I have a 21 2.7 AT 4wd accesscab, It has 265/75/16 cooper at3 4s which are one of the lightest. I also have a mid rise topper on the bed which doesn’t help. I threw on a LCE header and it definitely improved but didint cure the problem. I was thinking of 4.88s and changing to a 235/85/16 to keep the same height but have less of a contact patch. I will try swapping the tires to 235’s next. My coopers weigh 41lbs I was looking at
Firestone destination XT 235/85/16 which are 39lbs. Drop 2 lbs per corner and 1” more narrow should help. With the taller tire the rpm’s I think are just too low but I’ll try tire then gears. I live in NC but moved a little over a year ago from NY. I have taken the truck back and forth from NC to NY 3x already to visit family and to visit in-laws in FL so I understand the struggle. Around town it’s fine highway is where is struggles just not enough rpm’s. Curious to see your follow up looking forward to it maybe you can take a little video on the highway 65-75

Also do you know what the rpms are with the factory 4.30s with the stock tire 245/75/16 vs 265/75/16s at 65-70? I haven’t paid attention much but can tell it’s low with the 265/75s. I got it new and the factory tires were off after 3k.

Im pretty sure on stock 245s, once it locked the converter it was always below 2K in sixth gear. My rear view mirror would vibrate from the overloading at that low an RPM.

When i was driving today with 265's, 70 put me 1950-2000 so i figure 245's would be maybe 80-100 rpm more, i think 2250-2300 at 70 would be a good for the 2.7. I wonder if those calculations are right i would think going from 4.30 to 4.88 rpms would be more than 100-200 more. I am sure there are a lot of v6 guys that have done the 4.88 or 5.29 swap on 265/75/16s that may know.

Nice really curious the results if i was 2wd i would have jumped on gears a while ago a little harder to justify doing it twice

Welp, they are in.... first is a bit quicker, 2/3/4 still sluggish, 5/6 are in the realm of normal now. Now it feels like a 4 cyl truck, instead of its former confused self. 4.88 woulda been a waste of time. 6th gear, converter locked is viable at 60 MPH. 67 is 2200 RPMish. Maybe less. Right where I wanted to be.

Its not the huge change my previous 2.7 5 speed had, nor the revelation it was in a few DOHC 4.6 Mustangs going from 3.55 to 4.30/4.56. Its simply normal now.

Nice i have the lce header woke it up a bit may want to look into that or a pedal commander i have a no name brand but it totally takes away the sluggish feel until a tune is ready. Ive had a HCI LS cars and pulled the stock 3.42 gears for 4.10s was a drastic difference i know what you mean. I did not bought this truck for reliability not speed its my first 2.7 hope its the workhorse people make it out to seem. Glad it worked out 5.29's may be a little high for me if you wouldn't mind seeing what the rpms are at 75.

I was talking to LCE today, I had one on my last 2.7 Taco back in 14/15.

Not sure when I might be doing 75 but its less than +200 RPM per +5 MPH up there, closer to 150 so Id not concern myself with that. Ive no idea where the speed limiter might hit it but next time Im not loaded with my boat I will try to get a number for you and maybe push it to 80 just to see.

LCE called back, their header is a no go on a 2022 2.7. Changes to the AIS. If a work around comes about its my next and prob last mod. I will try to eyeball an earlier engine out in the World somewhere.
