Problem with diagnostic testers

I tried several diagnostic testers to track down cause foe check engine light. 1st, a free one at O'Reilly Auto (don't know brand) got "link error" message, and could go no further. Even manager could not get it to work. We checked for bad fuses; all good.

I then ordered an icarsoftJP V2.0, supposedly specifically for Toyota, along with several other Japanese brad vehicles. Same result; all I get is "Link Error".

I have followed instructions on how to connect; and tried multiple times.

Any suggestions would be apprciated.

 

First check that there are no piggyback devices on the OBD port then check pin 16 for power and pins 4 & 5 for ground, also may sure no pins are out of place.
If that all checks out your gona need someone with an oscilloscope and knowledge on how to diagnose the CAN bus system.
I'm assuming your referring to the 2019 TRD in your profile? Do you still have warranty on it?

I appreciate your thoughtful response. In the meantime, this AM, I called one of the local shops near me in Lafayette, CO, where I have recently had some maintenance work done. They offered to do a free scan and download of any codes, and it turned out to be a minor issue; probably caused by a gas cap not fully seated after fueling. However, the fact that their diagnostic code reader (I don't remember the brand) communicated through the OBD connector demonstrates no issue with that. The Tech then took my icarsoft JP V2.0 and tried it also. No luck; still read "Link error".

We then took both scanners to his 2017 Tacoma, and got the same results. His diagnostic scanner worked on his Tacoma; my icarsoft JP V2.0 diagnostic scanner again read "Link error". He then suggested that I, using my laptop, check icarsoft website for software updates for the icarsoft Jp V2.0. When i returned home, I went through the routine to update the software; it was not easy, and took about 1.5 hrs. I then thought, OK maybe this icarsoft scanner may now work. Disappointment; same negative result.

I then gave up and did an "Amazon product return"; so much for icarsoft daignostic scanner products!! My rating 0.0.

 

That's interesting that several scanners refused to connect, I've seen very few issues with actually connecting to a properly functioning vehicle.
Some may have issues with communicating to certain modules or give bad data but as far as actually connecting I don't see many problems.

No scanner is perfect, even the factory tools have their issues but there are quite a few good ones out there that can do most all modules and functions except for programming that can be had for under $1000.

I've been really impressed by the ThinkDiag bluetooth dongle (~$125 for the dongle + ~$79/year for enhanced functions), it uses a phone app but it has full vehicle module coverage and bidirectional controls for a small annual fee.
Of course it has it's quirks and glitches just like any other Chinese tool but for the price I don't think there's anything else with the same functionality.

I also have a SnapOn Verus Edge (~$3500 used) and Autel MS906BT (~$2500 new) that are my main tools but I do use the ThinkDiag when I wana do a quick scan without booting up one of the others.
