Can get 27 doing 70+ over long distances. 8yr old 2.7 I4. What’s the big deal? The 21/24 rating it came with has been a reliably easy mark to achieve.

Your tank shows full though, so the MPG on the display started over.

It has a lot to do with driving habits for sure. Now that accelerator pedals are an electronic sensor, car computers can be tuned to control driving habits and best economy isn’t a one size fits all control profile. I believe many drivers are fighting it. Seems to be some correlation to complaints about shift points and “gear hunting” and reports of poor fuel economy

Probably the case. Glad they still made the 5M back in 2014. I’m sure I could shift better than I do but at least it’s up to me.

Yeah that would be great next term they'll drop again. I think it was 3.58 a gallon today which was better than its been in a while. On the Westside of town where I live it's still hovering around 4.00 at regular gad stations.

the tacoma's mpg is not about the engine, its about the weight, tires and boxy design

Wrong it's always like this. Seems to be a lot of mileage envy on here. Learn to drive better and get better mileage. Or just trying to hype up the new engine by trying to put down current one  some of you all are childish. What's your mpg at? Good morning

you dropped a pic at the top of your tank as if that's indicative of mpg over distance. i'm pretty sure you had some idea how that would go over.

I'm almost inclined to go along with your buddy.
Ask me how I know? #6 cylinder failed compression/leak down test. 16K miles!

20/25/23 is simply not going to happen on the 4wd Tacoma. Not in the real world, not with how most people drive. The T24A-FTS is not a magic engine, and it's peak thermal efficiency is likely very similar if not slightly worse than the 2GR-FKS. The ONLY advantage the downsized turbo 4 cylinder has over the NA 6 cylinder is at low loads. If you baby your Tacoma, you will see MPG gains switching from 2GR to T24, but if you drive it hard, you may even see worse MPG than the V6 produced. Turbocharged spark ignition engines are inherently less efficient at high loads than NA engines, and the more boost, the greater the effect. The primary mechanism is the fact that you need to reduce the AFR to enhance cylinder cooling to prevent LSPI or knock at high loads. That and boosted engines typically run lower compression ratios than an NA can pull off which means more waste heat will be generated. Increased exhaust backpressure at the turbo is also a contribution, but we're getting to negligible territory now.

As far as the hybrid, I would expect it to make a much more dramatic improvement to efficiency. I would not expect 30 MPG in the real world though. 30 MPG could be done if the Highlander's hybrid system was retrofitted to work in a Tacoma, but it would only be doable with a very deliberate driving approach and in very good weather and traffic conditions.

The center cluster gauge is a bit misleading, I can get it up in the 30s if I fill up then hit the interstate driving 60. The informant screen History section is more true to what the average tank is, it will record what the best average is. Even though it says the current average is 24.9… the actual tank average will drop to 22.5-23. Still not bad.

Let’s see your informant screen history. :)

I fear that in the very near future we are going to have these convoluted turbo/hybrid setups that are so complicated that no vehicle/brand is reliable. At that point I won't have a reason to buy Toyota anymore.

our parents thought the same thing about all them fancy buttons and power windows, but here we are 30 years later and many modern vehicles are (or nearly) driving themselves.

    no, genius.

he means you literally just filled up and took that pic. it's not very indicative of the true MPG since it has had no time to do any averaging. on the flip side if you filled up and then just floored it out of the gas station until the speed limiter kicked in you're gonna see tank average mpg of like 7.

nobody tell him we all have first hand experience with the Tacoma's mpg gauge, he seems to be having such a great time thinking no one noticed the full tank.

or maybe he really doesn't know how it works himself.
