I plan to address this soon. I need to check out the URD deal. I'll be creating an access panel through the bed to do this work. There are two issues for me. First is the filter access, and second is that fuel pumps often fail with little warning. A friend just had this happen over a holiday weekend, leaving them stranded in a motel for days in a one horse town, waiting for the one local mechanic to get back home. The cost of a new pump can be dwarfed by the cost of towing, lodging, and loss of time. All to replace something that used to be a 30 minute roadside job if you had the part. It's ridiculous.

Agree,I also would like an access panel in the bed, would like a cover kind of like the billet aluminum gas cap covers they make.

Almost all vehicals made in the last 10 years make this compromise. Toyota had to do it (and a host of other comprimises) to remain competatively priced. This is one of those things that doesn't show up on speadsheets and car magazines and youtube reviewers don't talk about.

Sign of the times :\. Most people just wait until the stock fuel pump goes and then install an aftermarket pump with a retrofited external filter.

OP, do you have fault codes? If the filter is clogged or the pump not working well you should get one.
Otherwise replacing this is unnecessary. Preventative maintenance maybe but why fix what isn't broke?

True, but keep in mind the quality of gasoline can vary wildly and still meet EPA standards. Adherence to EPA standards is only part of the story when it comes to certifying gasoline. Storage brings a completely new set of issues.

Yup. Fuel pump is under the cab on DCSB trucks, cant access it from the top, you HAVE to drop the tank.

This is how the FSM tells you to do it(even with access cabs) just make sure take is almost empty.
Even if I had an access cab I would probably just drop the tank.

yeah it looks pretty easy to drop the tank, coupla tubes, an electrical connector and call it good.

Okay, I understand you now. The hatch/cover of the fuel tank is situated beneath the cab. It sounded like you were saying the fuel pump was underneath the cab as if it was outside of the tank.

I'd drop the tank personally, but many others have removed the bed...

I believe that’s called a vapor tank. I could be wrong, maybe someone can chime in who knows for sure. It comes from Toyota on a vapor hose part number 23820-0c011.

It's a baffle for the purge line. When the purge valve opens they don't want resonance from the intake manifold to travel up the purge line and affect the fuel tank pressure sensor.

Manufacturers often do the same thing on the air intake duct between the MAF sensor and throttle body. Smooths out the flow of air across the MAF

Thanks for the reply, it's position and shape makes me think liquid fuel, hopefully someone not only know why it's there but also if and when it should be replaced. Thanks again!

It smooths out the vacuum and only need to be replaced if it develops a vacuum leak.

Thank you for the info, so from what I can tell in these messages the only fuel filter in a 2nd gen is in the tank. If I had concern about poor quality fuel I'd probably cut into an easy access line somewhere and install one. Thanks again for the info!

Thanks to the OP for posting this. Reminds me of how pleased I was that the 1984 Longbed Deluxe had an external fuel filter carried in a small bracket mounted on the inside of the left rear fender, so I'd always carry a spare filter or two. Usual replacement time was when the 4-cylinder engine lost power climbing up a pass, so I'd pull off the shoulder, grab a new filter, lift the old one out of the bracket, pull off one hose at a time from the old, stick it on the new, and look at the water-filled old cartridge. stashing it for later disposal. Coastal Alaska needed that convenience, since I replaced that filter two or three times in the first 30k miles.
I'll be notified by email when the URD kit for my 2.7 is in stock. Thank you for this provision. I'll let you know what I find in my hard copy Haynes manual.
Hmmm, Doug Thorley headers for the 2TR-FE?

You'd be surprised at how much contamination the fuel filter will pick up.
