2018 Tacoma 60k miles. blown cylinder and cracked head

Yea but how many have had this issue and never go on any sort of forum?

We really will never know how big this issue is but if is happening to a select few on here, it's deff happening to people that will never post on a forum.

This issue is not isolated to the people who have made threads about it. For all we know it could be a super rare issue or it could be happening frequently.

The fact that there have been 3 or 4 pretty recently is not a good sign though.

 

Show me on the 3rd gen where @Superdave1.0 hurt you.

While I agree we'll never know the true number effected I think we have a large enough sample size on here to get a good idea of % with issues (if someone was so inclined). If anything a forum this large will probably skew things higher rather than lower. Take a look at a lot of the people that have issues; they joined just to post them. It's like going to a hospital to see how many people have the flu. Yeah not everyone there will have it but a higher % will over the general public.

Even though it's statistically unlikely this will happen to me I'll admit its happening a little more than I'd like to see. What really bothers me about it is we don't know exactly why it's happening.

 

Really only Toyota knows the failure rate of these engines. It could be higher than we think or it could be lower.

 

One thing I will say is that an aluminum engine when it overheats is a very bad thing . They cannot handle heat like cast iron. So we all need to pay attention to that in any car that has an all aluminum engine . If you really overheat one / from experience the motor is usually done. This is one of the very bad things about aluminum. Don’t get me wrong . Cast iron will crack also , I’ve seen it but it takes longer.

 

Check out this article about how Toyota handled a blown GR86 engine with 13K miles. They searched the owners social media and blamed it on his driving seen in photos. WTF! Has Toyota lost all sense of customer loyalty?

Decent chunk of that will be the new motor, not sure what the hours are on pulling and installing. Guessing 15-20 hours start to finish. They overshoot so atleast 150 an hour labor plus fluids and all the other smaller items

 

At the very least Toyota corporate should provide the parts. You can negotiate labor rates/hours with any Toyota dealership that wants your business.

 

I really don't get why people feel this way, the truck is out of warranty. Why should Toyota provide any assistance to fix something out of warranty? I get that it sucks to have a problem like this just 1k out of warranty, but its out of warranty so Toyota doesn't have any legal or moral obligation to help at all.

Why would it be moral? Both Toyota and the buyer agreed to the warranty at the time of sale. What the difference between a failure 1k out of warranty and 100k out of warranty? Why should one be covered and the other not?

 

Well I’m sure to most people, engine failing 1k outside of warranty and Toyota not doing anything about it, is just not right. At least cover half. This is why we buy Toyota’s right.

Yeah that car is branded as a Toyota, yeah it's marketed as a week end track car, but it's a Subaru, and it's not a WRC where Subaru does have some notoriety.

I like the 86, but it's a retail Subaru being spun across a road course. No surprise Toyota won't cover the warranty repair.

What happens at Toyota when someone does this with a new Supra?

Maybe a Mazda MX-5 Miata would handle the track much better.

 

Why isn't it right? This is what I'm not getting, sounds kind of greedy and entitled(not trying to cause offense). Toyota doesn't owe you anything past its contract with you.

 

Toyota should cover the cost to show some customer loyalty and avoid bad publicity. If there engines can’t last 60K miles then people should move on to other manufacturers that will. 60K is nothing. Hyundai stands behind theirs for 100K.

 

They are going to cover the cost now that the owner stirred up a bunch of bad publicity for them online.

 

I understand the customer loyalty and publicity angle, what I don't understand is why the expectation is that they should for some moral reason, Its "not right" if they don't. If Toyota covers something out of warranty it should be treated as a gift, not just what you are owed because you bought a Toyota.

 

Sure.

I mean you pay 40k for a vehicle and 1k outside of warranty the most expensive part blows up. Toyota is known for their reliability right. So IMO they should definitely take care of the customer somehow.

If I got treated like that, I think it would be my last brand new Toyota.

 

They market their vehicles as dependable and long lasting and then tell you to go screw when it blows up at 61K. That’s pathetic and no one should think that’s ok no matter how much of a Toyota fan boy you are.
