So the cause of yesterday's water fall from the cold air return: a clogged drain, a failed safety switch which would have shut off the unit, and an improperly installed back up safety switch. We shop vac'd water out of the trays and air tube, emptying my 16 gallon vacuum three times. 32+ gallons of water. All fixed, no plumbing issues. Learned today that an air conditioner in humid conditions can draw 30-40 gallons of water from the air per day. Just glad this happened when we were home.
