Any woodworkers?

One definite take away from canoe building, No matter how many clamps you own, you’re going to need more clamps. I think I would need 40 to actually do both sides at once.

No, I’ve been putting some of it on instagram, but honestly probably put more pictures in this thread.

It’s also a good thing I dry fit those inwales a couple times, just snapped one as I was epoxying it in. Able to get it pulled and cleaned up though. Probably need to double the length of my scarf joint and find longer lumber. I can only come up with 6’ pieces of ash, so I have two joints right at the spot I need to twist them both up and in. Lots of torque in a small area that happens to land right on my joint.

 

Can you move the joint? Or have several shorter pieces?

 

Ideally I can find 10’ boards and put my joint in the middle where the bend is pretty consistent. The piece itself needs to be about 17’ long, so even if I did 3 joints instead of the current 2, the outside two are going to be pretty stressed where they fall.

 

And 4 joints or more would just be silly? I don't know anything about boat building, but I know sometimes more joints can be better or worse.

Is steaming it not an option?

 

That’s probably the next plan if I can’t get longer lumber. the specialty lumber supplier that carried everything around here shut down a couple years ago, but I think I found another spot that claims to carry longer lengths of hardwood.

milled some maple this morning. those are about 6' long, 40" widest point.// 8/4"

 

Dang! How long is your mill? What's the widest you can cut?

 

How would you brace it? Would love to hear it

 

two ways:
1. across the bottom. close that box that rests on the floor.
2. create 3 simple cross-members that span its diameter.
3. drill a 1/4" hole 4" from each end of each cross-member.
4. wedge them into place.
5. use a zip tie through each hole and around the adjacent section of frame. voila..

 

56" bar
48" cut comfortably.

 

I like it! Mines a 36 inch bar with 27 inch cut

 

Going to go look at a used harbor freight bandsaw. What are some good blade brands for cutting mostly hardwoods. Oak, maple,cherry etc
