2018 Tacoma 60k miles. blown cylinder and cracked head

How would running it hotter increase mpgs and/or meet CAFE requirements? Do the 3.5s usually run in the 200s?

I’d hope the engineers would’ve designed the engine to withstand whatever operating temps they were going for, but I’m fascinated by this theory.

 

To give this a different twist, if Toyota extends warranty coverage to one guy, is it therefore not fair to everyone else? What of those who paid big money for an extended warranty? What of those who trade before warranty expiration to avoid problems? If a 60,000 mile warranty is 62,000 for some, but 65,000 for others, and strictly 60,000 for most, how is this a good thing? Exceptions for some but not others? Seems like it could even be a legal can of worms.

 

No cooler thermostat is available. It's a funky design.

The hotter coolant raises the temperature of the oil, reducing friction. That is right from the Toyota literature. Add the the hot DI lean burn and we have exhaust valve issues. Again, best guess... could be wrong.

While I do hear you, it’s not an answer I would accept as one of those unfortunate paying customers. Absolutely every single owner that suffers a premature failure like this should be covered with, well why don’t we go with 100,000 miles which is what the brand he mentiond is good for. And a few several thousand beyond that because it should just work that long, that’s why. Toyota did this to themselves by being mostly exceptionally reliable for decades. It has become an unsung expectation long past the warranty. Now if some soft handed young keyboard warrior is ballin out of control because of some luck with crypto and doesn’t give two shits about about paying for his replacement engine and all of the others one too, great. Some people don’t appreciate the value of a dollar when they don’t have to earn a living though actual work. And I am not referring to anyone here I am speaking in general.

Bottom line is I’m on your side and everyone else’s as a Toyota owner. I’d like Toyota to be Toyota for everyone and not just the lucky, diligent ones.

 

I guess it depends on how many engines are blowing up. If it’s just a few then Toyota can eat the costs. If it’s a lot then they probably should think about a recall before it becomes a class action lawsuit.

 

Good point re 100K. I think even with older cars (think like 70s-80s) it was reasonable to expect that from an engine. I've driven primarily older cars and can only think of one that didn't hit that mark, most got well over. Oddly the one that didn't was my 2006 Colorado puking the top end at 70K

Seems cheap. I bought a 22r short block from a dealer for $2200. in 2000. I've seen the 2.7 SB for $3k. So I figured a 6 would cost more.

 

05/06 2nd gen head gaskets issues are still popping up today but usually the trucks have 200k plus miles.

 

I don't think 10 degrees warmer in coolant temp is going to burn a valve. The lean DI I'm sure doesn't help with temps. My opinion is something is causing these valves to hang open and that's what's burning them. But at this point we're all just guessing.

 

192 degrees really isn't that hot for a modern engine.

 

How can you possibly have to argue with extended warranty folks with this issue? cylinder is cracked, headgasket is blown. You purchased an extended warranty. I dont know the terms of your warranty obviously but, outside of you having to possibly paying a small deductible, that shit should be covered no questions asked...

 

Plus the thermostat has nothing to do with the top temperature a motor runs at. A 180 degree thermostat just opens earlier than a 190 degree thermostat. Your motor could hypothetically operate at 1,000 degrees with a 192 degree thermostat. The thermostat just controls when the coolant starts flowing vs. Staying static so the motor can warm up.

 

Possibly the fact that the extended warranty people deem it to have a manufactures defect that was noted within the warranty period and not corrected?

I don’t recall the OP mentioning a burnt valve but I could’ve missed that. I thought the 2GR had hydraulic lifters which don’t require adjustment, but of course that doesn’t mean they can’t have their own flaws.

They didn’t cover my 2020 at 65k miles but I had extended warranty, so I can see how they may treat someone without additional warranty differently (maybe they consider mine covered and not as big a deal).. i am still annoyed with Toyota in how they handled it, but I can see their side from an immediate business stand point. Just makes me less likely to do any future business with them. Trouble is that Ford, GM, or Chrysler do exactly the same shit and have terrible failures as well..

I mean possibly? But that’s a fight between Toyota and the warranty company. I would be an ass and say I don’t give a f*** who’s paying for it. It’s covered either way. Fix it so I can have my truck back. The dealership should be taking care of it regardless. The money is coming from someone other than the truck owner…
