The monthly payment isn't really the important number. You can walk into a dealership and give them a reasonable number ("I don't want to pay more than XXX dollars a month) and they'll work out a plan in a lot of cases.

The problem is their plans involve 84 month loans and super high interest.

Yup, worst thing you can do is decide on a payment first, not the actual sale price.

So is it safe to say I am in the lead with $1309.10 every month?

I'm paying $290 a month. I "paid" $15,000 for an '06 with 115,000 miles on it. Hope I'm not being stupid. Sold my pride and joy to make the payment under $300. Being a poor-white-trash-red-neck, it's about all I can afford. I does make it possible to pay off the Visa I jacked up for the ToyTec ULK, LR UCA's and Dakar rear leaves though:thumbsup:!! Can't forget the Duratracs either!

Yes. That would be in the lead. You must have had a cheap 1 year truck or a dual cab at 2 years.

That's another thing to think of for you people that plan on paying on the truck longer than most people stay at a job.

You're paying something like $35-50k on a truck with a retail value of $17-30k. Something happens like, you lose your job, get married, roof caves in and you need to fix it, have some liability you have to pay for, you'll be under a truck that you owe a bunch on that retails for almost nothing.
If you think your 4 year old 20 thousand dollar tacoma is going to sell for 15, you're crazy, and you still owe 18000 on it due to the extended interest you've been paying.
They sell for decent resale right now, but that's sailing on their old reputation. Their resale will start dipping as gas prices don't go down and toyota's reputation starts sliding (which it has for years, but apparently people round here aren't up on it).

Point being, now you're increasing your payment more because you better damn well have GAP insurance.

Not to mention, you've got to be paying the 500 dollar deductible insurance on an old "pos" at 5 years. Where as I can drop my insurance down to 150 bucks a year or so. Its expensive to have a loan, every way you look at it.

I pay $322.74 a month. I'm more of a believer of financing as little as possible by putting a large down payment upfront. I also double up on payments as often as I can (I think I'm about 7 months ahead right now).

So to answer your question I wouldn't like going above $350. Not because I can't, but because I don't want to.

I'm paying $472 a month but that is only because I did 36 month 0% financing. I am so happy my last payment is this month, now I can spend that money elsewhere.

Nah, just had my first Toyota P/U ('93) for 15 years. Paid cash for that as well, and it's amazing what you can save when you don't have a truck payment for 15 years.

You probably shouldn't worry about what other people would take on. Don't take on more than you can afford and you'll be fine.

Great logic...Millions of home foreclosures confirm people don't ever take on what they cannot "afford"...LOL and I'm guessing the car payments were stopped first in most cases.
