IBA rules for a Saddlesore only require that the miles be completed inside of a 24 hour period. I've known folks to do it both ways, straight shot of over 1k and some that blasted out half or more then stopped for a break, say for a good meal, then finished their ride.

I've got a few of these rides credited so far and look forward to doing more. None of mine have ever been a simple "out and back" on the same stretch of road. Nothing wrong with that, and probably the easiest way to complete it, but that hasn't appealed to me. 2 rides I did while participating in long distance rallies which meant multiple stops to take pictures of something to prove I'd been there. 2 rides have been while participating in Tour of Honor which required stopping to visit and photograph multiple memorials to fallen service men and women. My g/f even has her IBA membership number form going along on one of those. That particular ride we visited 6 memorials for Tour of Honor, 2 stops for another Grand Tour I was taking parts in, 2 restaurants, sadly both closed when we got there for a Facebook motorcycle group event, a restaurant for a dinner break that was open, and 5 fuel stops. So that's 16 total stops while covering 1109 miles in 22.5 hours leaving me an average speed of under 50 mph.

If you decide you want to try your hand at one reach out to me via PM and I'd be happy to help you with advice or planing ideas. The hardest one is the first one and in reality even that's not that hard! The biggest block is overcoming that mental boundary most people have. I will warn you though, after that first time it becomes easier to start planning more and your world becomes a whole lot smaller.

    That's a bummer man.

The one bright spot is at least you are mechanically inclined enough to get it torn down, find the problem and hopefully be able to put it all back together and fix it yourself once you are able to get the new parts needed. Some people would be completely intimidated and not have a clue what to other than simply throw money at it or let it sit until they can.

Trying to think how I can do one on the Honda grom without dying on the highway  maybe the lighthouse tour is a better idea

Saddlesore 1000 works out to a 42 mph average over 24 hours. You need to do slightly over the 1000 to allow for odometer error and you need time for fuel stops. I think it could be done but that would sure add to the challenge!

I just jumped over to the IBA page and you can pull up a list of completed certified rides and then filter by bike. There are 6 rides on there done on a Honda Grom including a bun burner which is 1500 miles in 36 hours!

    Go for it!

It cruises 55 comfortably and needs gas every 130 miles. That doesn’t leave much room for error. Crazy doing 1500 miles in 36hrs!

Need to build a rotopax mount backpack, get a couple of roadside fillups in between actual gas station stops.[IMG]

If it cruises comfortably at 55 a Saddlesore has sufficient time. 130 mile range would mean 8 fuel stops on the road if you start with a full tank. Allowing for 10 minute stops your 24 hours is now 22 hours 40 minutes so you need to average 45 mph.

That's cool to see the different bikes. A few people have done it on a Yamaha Bolt... I think 310 miles in a day is the most I've ridden mine, and that gets tiring in the wind

Not having some form of a windscreen would definitely make it harder! I can't get over how some of these folks intentionally find ways to make it more challenging. There was a guy at the beginning of this year who put 100k miles on a new Harley Road Glide in just 100 days! He did it as a fundraiser of some sort but even still that's mind boggling to me even.

Definitely needs a new piston, valves and all of the accompanying bits. Check the cylinder wall for scoring. When I rebuilt the engine on my RMZ250 I went the easy route and bought a brand new replacement cylinder with piston. More expensive, but didn't have to wait for a machine shop to work on the cylinder. Once you get the top end off you'll want to check the rod for play. Hopefully the bottom end is okay.

Agreed, and I have a memory of you telling me that someone hard-tailed their Bolt and did it on that!?

And yeah 100k miles is a feat on it's own, unbelievable accomplishment to do it in that short of time

Correct. "Long Haul" Paul Pelland. He's also just become the first to hit 100k miles on the new T7 Tenere.

    https://www.longhaulpaul.com/

I had the pleasure of meeting him back in 2013 on my first long distance rally where he served as a time critical bonus stop. Check him out as he's truly an interesting and inspiring individual. Not to mention certifiable nut case. All in a good way!

Not exactly but Paul Pelland, mentioned in my other post, has done a Saddlesore like that on a chassis dyno.
