You have any clue what she is? Almost looks like an Akita crossed with a GSD.

Is there a possibility of burning a valve from it running rich with the KS code?

I really don't, definitely a lot of GSD, has the crook in the snout and the tri-color, dunno what else though cause she isn't as tall and doesn't have the full on Carolina squat hips.

Like Zane mentioned, just replace the ECT sensor.

No reason why you'd get that code unless that sensor had an issue. Your temp gauge on your dash may work, but that's independent of your sensor that communicates with your ECM.

That sensor tells the ECM it's operating temp, and if it isn't working, could get stuck in an open loop or not even turn on at all.

No, it just wastes fuel, really the KS keeps it from using efficient amounts of timing advance so you lose power. The CTS makes it run rich and often high idle because it defaults to cold temp. At least change the coolant sensor soon, it's a quick job, front and center on the top of the engine and not expensive.

I made pancakes and bacon the other day. Gave her a small cake with a couple dots of syrup. She was beside herself in anticipation.

Thanks guys. I’ll try to pick up a coolant sensor from the dealer. I’m assuming it’s the same part number for all years of the 5VZ

I will always have a place in my heart for the VK56. The Titan is racking up the miles. The boys learned about engines on the VH45. That doesn't mean that I love the 2UZ or 5VZ any less. They all have a place in this family. So many learnings can be applied across the board. I see Toyota, Nissan Trucks, and Infiniti cars as 5th cousins once removed. The common ancestor was an airplane company with Prince Motor Company being on the Nissan side of the family -- not Datsun. Sometimes hard to explain and understand since the airplane company would rather be forgotten.

    Same.

Sensor requires a deep socket, cause it's pretty big.

It's the one that's unplugged in this pic right in front of and below the fuel rail.

The sensor for the ECU or the temp guage?

I wish you were closer. I have all of the special tools and a built 5VZ sitting in my workshop.

I think it’s for the ECU? I was monitoring the temps on the scan gauge and they stayed in the 180s so that seemed normal. But I guess a bad sensor can still cause it to run rough regardless.

Why do you just have a fresh 5VZ?

The one that I pulled from the 99 model 1st gen before installing the 98 model 4Runner engine. Runs but has the wrist pin noise. Newly refreshed heads though. Previous owner issues.

    Read up :luvya:

The sensor communicates with the ECU, and provides readings through OBDII. That's located at the front as shown in the pic I posted.

A sender (not really mentioned at all here), is located at the rear and tells the dash needle where to sit. Single wire, resistor.

I've seen a bad ECTS (connected to ECU) cause hard to start when hot or cold issues with Nissans. The fuel mix is always wrong unless you happen to be at the temp where the sensor is stuck or failed.

I always thought the gauge wire was kinda pointless to be honest, the gauge is so deadened it really doesn't say much besides that youve already overheated
