Little pop when I first start driving

I have a new 2022 SR. I get a little pop from what seems like the front end when I first start driving. It happens when it sits a few hours and I leave a parking spot and begin going it’ll pop once and that’s it. Not sure if it’s something I should be worried about or not. Any ideas?

Front brake pads shifting, and its normal. Thats my first guess, at least. Dive as far down the "front end click/pop/clunk" rabbit hole you want, but you'll pretty much convince yourself your truck sucks by the end of it (which it doesn't).

 

Brand new truck.. take it to the dealer..

 

Put 1,000 miles on it. Follow the break-in procedure in the manual. It's likely parts settling. If it doesn't go away after that, have a dealer take a look just to make you feel better and have any issue on the record.

 

If not front brake pads shifting, check torque spec for LCA bolts and torque them accordingly. Many alignment shops fail to torque them to the correct amount, and you'll get front end pops alot. Can also look into radiator support/body mount/bushings, but its a long dark hole, and you may never find the actual source, aka its all "normal" if you ask Toyota.

What flavor and how much pop do you get from the front end?

 

I had a similar issue when backing out of my driveway and turning. Turned out the bed bolts were loose and when the frame and body flexed ever so slightly it made a noise. Tightened the bed bolts all is good

 

Grease propeller shaft too possibly. I know the manuals clunk a bit too which is unnerving.

 

If you use your E brake / parking brake, it could possibly be that letting go after you release the handle and begin to drive. I 2nd driving it more before worrying something's actually off.

 

The front brake pads frequently make kind of a clang noise after the truck sits for a while.

 

None of the above! It is the computer waking up doing a ABS check. Mine does it too. Nothing to worry about. My truck is almost 4 years old now. Done it since day 1.

 

Pad slap. It is normal. No idea why these trucks do it when every other manufacturer seems to have it addressed, but here we are. Basically, the pads move slightly within the calliper. The combination of brake pressure and rotor rotation ensures the pads stay "up" when you're driving or stopping. If you shift to reverse or park (with no brake pressure) you'll likely hear it again but you'll mostly notice it when you first get in and drive. It's not harmful, just annoying when you're not used to it.

The previous comment suggested the ABS self check. That is also a possibility. Also harmless, just annoying if you aren't used to it

We have a winner. If you pay close attention, you’ll see that it happens at the exact same speed every time. Can’t remember if it’s 3mph or 5mph. Same way the doors lock at a certain speed. Absolutely normal though.

 

Can you opt out?

I’ve been told the ABS on 1st gens wasn’t great. I am greatful mine has none.

 

I was going to say check your tires for a pebble stuck in the treads which would scratch or pop when starting out but you wouldn't likely hear it once you got moving. However, now I vote for the computer ABS check also.
