Brake pads and rotors in BAD shape

First time changing pads and rotors. I’ve always taken the truck to the dealer.
The pads were REALLY bad. It’s a 2017 with 55k miles. Any ideas why they were this bad? The two locking pins were very hard to get out. Think they could’ve kept the pads engaged all the time? Only allowing them to release slightly

 

I mean those pins could cause the brakes to drag and not release properly.
I'm in a rust belt (Atlantic Canada) and do my own front brake service every spring. The pins get some love as part of this.
I guess your dealer never took the front wheels off? Sheesh

 

Well, you use your brakes a lot.

Better flush the fluid and check the rear shoes!

 

No brakes left, looks like metal on metal there.

 

Downshift and engine brake in hills and mountains don't ride your brakes.

 

Some shit nugget is undoubtedly going to retort with "brakes are cheaper than clutches and engines".

 

Your better off changing the pins every few brake jobs when the start to look like that. They are cheap enough and add a little brake grease. The pads will definitely bind with all the rust.

 

What did you expect?

 

Whenever the wheels are off, eyes need to be on the pads, end of story. Your dealer or whoever rotated your tires or replaced your tires failed you. I would not reuse those pins either with all that pitting. Those need to be smooth to allow the pads to slide.

They are. Doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use engine braking when appropriate though.

Looks like pretty even wear. Being in NJ, rust is a concern. You need to "service" brakes every two winters or so, i.e. remove the pads, scrub the calipers with a brush, apply new grease to the pad backing plate edges, locking pins, and piston faces. If the locking pins are rusted, replace them, they're $2 on Rock Auto.

 

Salt on roads in winter is hell on parts down there. 55K on front brakes is acceptable, especially for a truck if you are carrying loads.
Measure your rotor thickness.
