Brake pads and rotors in BAD shape

Time for a nice brake upgrade. Never let a disaster like that go to waste.

 

Wow, those aren't brakes.
Pull full service, clean up everything, install new brake pads, rotors, a little bit of grease on the pins will help. Post some pics when done. Good luck with your truck.

 

So far so good, the spring cleanup works. No binding that I can discern, and pad wear is even. The pins come right out too.

 

My 19 year old tundra had better looking calipers and pad pins than the ones in the op's pictures. Where has the truck been sitting, in a swamp?

They were worn out 5,000 miles ago! That little metal tab should have been squealing long before you got to that point!

 

I'm fixing to do brakes this morning, how are the calipers pushed in? Can I do it with a c-clamp or so I need that 3/8"-drive nub box I used on my 1992 Toyota?

 

Leave the old pad against the pistons so they both go in together. Squeeze pistons in. Replace with new.pads.

 

c-clamp use the back side of the pad to push both pistons in. The right way to do it is get a empty plastic bottle. Fill it up partially with brake fluid. Put a clear hose on the bleeder valve nice a tight .
Loosen the bleeder valve with the other end of the hose submerged in the brake fluid and push the pistons in. Once done close the bleeder valve. Just Remember once the new pads are on and buttoned up . Put you foot on the brake pedal and the fluid level on the master will go down. Add fluid and pum tight keeping the master fill. Repeat on other side. You don’t want to put that nasty fluid in the calipers back up in the master cylinder.

Probably to keep air from getting into the caliper.

 

Actually I gave you wrong info .Fill the master cylinder up before you pump the brakes . It will be low already because your brakes are so worn . Unless someone filled it up at a service .That is always a big red flag that you need brakes when the master cylinder is low

 

One of the first things I was taught when I was learning to drive is the better driver you are, the less you need your brakes. I’m not throwing shade at OP. I’m saying, when one makes an effort to pay attention to traffic patterns and anticipate the moves of others around you, you don’t need your brakes as much. Of course most people nowadays are very special and above the law so they can’t be bothered to put their phone down and use their blinker, much less try to analyze traffic. Oh well, stupid people suffer stupid people problems. Glad that’s not me.

 

the more aware you are the more you realize not many people are aware of their surroundings

 

you should be able to hear when the pads are getting low unless you are deaf.

 

That is why the OPs pads have no braking material left and now metal on metal.

 

It's not cocaine, though make a crap ton of money.

54k and still have a lot of life left on my OEM pads/rotors/drums/shoes.

 

68264 miles and my OEM pads were only about 50% gone; my truck does a lot of commutting between 5,000' and 10,000', but I have a gear shift and coast a lot. Brake shops hate people like me. Master cylinder was at "full" before and after I changed the pads.
