My neighbor bought a 2018 Tacoma Sport and has used up all his free oil changes so he calls me to help with oil change. He broke the ears of the plastic oil filter canister because it had been over tightened. We replaced the broken plastic with the genuine Toyota/Lexus aluminum replacement. Other than that it’s one of the easier ones I’ve seen The wimpy OEM skid plate is really just a dust cover.

A little over 6 quarts of Mobil1 0w20 and that factory filter element with all the cute o rings and he’s back on the road.

I've done first oil changes on 3 Tacomas now, and I can tell you that those oil filters do NOT come overtightened from factory. With correct oil filter wrench and just a 3/8 wrench they are easily loosened.

And you said this truck has only been serviced by free Toyota Care, that means the dealership overtightened that.

    "overtightened"........ Nah it wasn't.
There is a ton of seal drag on these.

The most efficient way to remove it is with a 24" or longer 1/2 breaker bar, the correct filter socket, and go slow. Easy and done.

Just wondering why the filter cap is sitting in the vice like it is, or regardless of how its clamped in the vise.

Always hand tighten an oil filter, put oil on the gasket and if you want it easy on a 3rd gen Taco...buy a 4 cylinder.

That’s a good question and from the position it’s in you can’t see the ears are broken off, he never took the small plug off the end and he spilled a small amount of oil. The guy is 76 years old and did this himself. I might add he’s also had a stroke so one arm is weak. Let this be an incentive for able bodied younger people to get to know your machine. We salvaged the plug and used that new aluminum housing so it’s all good now. Dave has only racked up 18k miles since new

If you use the right tool for the job, the plastic ears aren't touched.

Thought about changing mine for the first time today, then came to my senses and did a couple hours of yard work in the hot Florida sun instead.

I thought about mine sitting in its un-air-conditioned garage on another 100+ degree heat index day here in Michigan - felt sorry for it.
