Story Time With Gritto

I've told this story before, but I'll add some more details here:

My Dad flew a B-24 Liberator bomber in the 5th Air Force, New Guinea, 1943.
Their rear base was in Townsville, Queensland, Australia.
Main Operations base was Seven Mile Field, Port Moresby.

Conditions were primitive... no Quonset huts for them forward of Townsville.
They were often at advanced bases anyway, so... tents.

He said there was a long list of unpleasant things about New Guinea.
Here are a few:

- Jungle rot (he said he never totally got rid of his susceptibility to fungus infections... like under toenails)
- Minor scratches that ulcerated.
- Atabrine tablets for Malaria, that made your skin turn yellow... and didn't always prevent Malaria.
- Worry that you might fall into the hands of cannibals if you had to bail out in the Bush.
- Starving Japanese stragglers raiding the mess tent at night...

The worst was the Flying Foxes.

Tropical fruit trees don't bear fruit all at once.
Whenever a particular tree had ripe fruit, the Flying Foxes would come at night and made a helluva racket.
My Dad, or someone else, would snap and go out and fire off a few shots from their .45 service pistols.
(BTW, aircrew did not have priority for being issued 1911 A1 pistols... many had Colt or Smith & Wesson revolvers with half moon clips to fire .45 ACP cartridges.)

All the gunfire gave you was maybe half an hour or so of peace and quiet before the bats came back.


Sleep is precious to anyone who has served in a war zone.
Both sides indulged in night time "heckler" raids, in which a single intruder aircraft would loiter overhead and drop a bomb now and then.
The purpose was, of course, to deprive the enemy of sleep.
My Dad said the Japanese had nothing on Flying Foxes for ruining one's sleep.
