It would seem the damage takes around 150k before the oil burning starts. So yes, there's still time to prevent damage.

looking in the cylinder with a bore scope would be the safest way to know.

Um, no. You have no idea when damage starts. Do not perpetuate myths a nd rumors.

Was watching a segment on sema where the hosts were interviewing the baxter company rep on their spin on oil filter adaptors. They especially named that toyota has been having trouble with their oil filter design causing oil starvation when you start up the engine, or change your oil. Said its imperative to be sure you fill your oil cartridge housing before installing it when doing an oil change on these trucks. Their engines are precision machined with tight tolerances that this matters more than the manufactures oil change intervals. These engines need lubrication as well as instant oil pressure.

I’m on the other side of the state zoo. I’ve got the Baxter spin on adapter AND the relocation kit. The filter sits just to the passenger side of the radiator along that front part of the engine. I install the tallest filter I can squeeze in.

I installed it around 10,000 miles and now have 16,000. Makes changing oil extremely easy and doesn’t require tools because I also have the maligned Fumoto- gasp.

Biggest mistake you can make if you plan on keeping any vehicle long term is going longer than 5,000 miles between oil changes. Even synthetic oil isn't as good as most make it out to be. Lots of Toyotas with 100,000 miles that burn a qt of oil every few hundred miles and none of them halved the manufacturers interval to 5K miles. The ones that go 200-300K with no real issues in the engine had frequent service.

I do mine every 5000 or 6 months. Cheaper than replacing an engine.

I test mine every 10k and analysis usually says the oil is still good and I could move to 12k intervals. If the oil is good, it's good.

    No oil consumption yet.

I guess we'll see.... next oil change (120,000 miles) should happen in December.

There should be a 3k oil change interval for those who use the truck for camping idling all night long.

    I agree.

I bought the first year 2003 Honda Pilot in 2002, in Oahu Hawaii--it shared the same frame with the Acura MDX.

That beauty lasted me 213K+ miles with regular oil the first 150K miles then synthetic after that.

In my mind, 3K miles was the target point...that, and color of the oil which turning black raised the alarm bells for me.

I'm the type of owner who does oil level checks at least once a week...2 weeks, when I'm not on point.

Once the next two ToyotaCare services are done: 20K/25K, I will be doing my own oil changes on Dover Air Force Base at the Auto Hobby Shop.

I plan on doing my own brake pads/rear shoes when needed. I can turn both rotors on base (disk/drums) and change the differential oil as well as the transmission oil. Anything major that is out of my level of experience, I will have the dealership complete.

I plan on keeping my Sport for as long as I did my Pilot.

For the last couple of years, it's been an annual oil change for me. Since the shift to working from home, I've been averaging less than 3,000 miles of driving annually. Bought my first Tacoma (used 2020 with about 10,000 miles on it) in March of this year. Previous owner did two oil changes at a dealership, at least according to the Toyota maintenance record. Guessing it will be an annual oil change on the Taco, at least until the ability to travel picks-up. Have driven it less than 200 miles since the purchase. Almost feel bad for it sitting in the garage so much. I think the lawn mower has gotten more miles on it than the truck (joking - I think...) this year so far!

5k or 5 months which ever comes first. If you lease it and turning it in at the end of the lease 10k all day long.

I saw the Baxter Rep talking about Jeeps, said they have the filter sitting upside down and all the oil drains out every time you park. They designed some sort of check valve to keep the oil in the filter, suppose that can be beneficial.

You have apparently missed all the threads of the 250K-300K Tacoma guys who change their every 10-15K.

This is what I know. I have worked on cars for a living for a long time now and have collected some oil from some newer cars and this is an accumulation of what is in the engine. I base this on no scientific evidence whatsoever so I won’t even debate it. You may be able to pull a sample and send it to black stone and they might tell you “it still has some life in it” and maybe they are right. Maybe you could ladle this right into your crankcase and it would lube just fine. As for me I do 5k because I want as little of this shit In my engine as possible. I know there are 75 TW engineer’s and 237 TW mechanics that will tell you they do 10k oic and it’s fine but not one of the guys I have ever worked with leaves oil in that long. I don’t care about YouTube or blackstone or Toyota gods that say 10k is fine. I go with what I see everyday. So you go with whatever hard evidence you trust and gives you that warm fuzzy feeling.I used these for oil changes only and on cars and trucks 2010 and newer just for kicks. Do keep in mind this is from many different engines and driving habits but it doesn’t matter. There is a little crap in all of them. Enough to matter? Don’t really care. 5k on oil is enough for me. I let a bunch of filters drain into the white one along with the oil but I didn’t take any of them apart. The red one oil only.
