Looking exceptionally great under the covers for the motor having 300k + miles on the Odometer...

Needed the heads off today, they are being picked up first thing Monday morning by the machine shop.. on a tight time frame.

One thing I wish I had done when I had my heads off was to install the retarded-timing cam gear that folks here on TW seem to really like. I don't know if it's actually beneficial, and maybe you think this is a really stupid idea, or maybe you have already installed them.

But based on what's been posted on that thread since I did my HGs, I wish I would have swapped them in. I've since bought a set of course, but no way I'm tearing the engine apart for just that. Waiting for my valve cover gasket leak to get worse, or for a mouse to eat my knock sensor wiring again.

Rodents and engine control harnesses are no joke..¡no bueno!

Hopefully the aftermarket exhaust cam gears live up to all the hype. Some time Tuesday the heads will be back, and running Wednesday before end if day. I'm pretty curious if I'm able to tell a difference with the new gears.

Nice, that's a lightning pace compared to how I did it!

So you got a set of the retarded-timing gears then? I was going to offer you mine if you didn't have them yet and wanted to throw them in this week, but it sounds like you're a step ahead. Curious to hear what you think about them... perhaps someday I'll get around to installing mine.

Surprisingly there wasn't much carbon buildup on the piston heads, and what was there took very little effort to remove. The valves ooked even better, sadly I wasn't able to get pics before they were sent off..

Not bad for mostly Arco and Sam's Club Gas

Local machine shop did me wrong with the quality of their work.. metal shavings and other debris/foreign material was found everywhere on both heads. And also the heads weren't hot tanked..

That sucks, man! I can recommend Valley Auto Parts and Engines in Sun Valley if you are looking to have them reworked. Mine came back looking like new. Plus he hot-tanked some of the other gritty stuff I didn't want to try cleaning in my driveway.

After putting on nearly 500 miles this weekend, about 100 miles of that on dirt. I can say is I wish I had installed the Exhaust Cam Gears years ago. Really can feel the difference when aired and cruising on the trails. Throttle response is much better and smoother.

    Last night's camp spot..

The show from this Lightning Storm lasted all night..

Finally, after months of waiting for my Transmission Fluid Temparature Guage... it arrived, got it installed in a short time..

    20220831_183237.jpg

^ the temperature shown on the gauge is roughly what the temperature is inside the engine bay, the sender unit was loosely ziptied near the brake booster.. and with the newly installed Trans Fluid Gauge, time to install the Trans Cooler..

Mishimoto Transmission Cooler with Fan Installed..

I chose to delete the OEM Trans Cooler interily for space. The new Trans Cooler fits pretty well in the stock location using the two provided brackets. This is temporary using those brackets. Proper ones will be made up soon.

    20220911_104924.jpg

    Intalled..

^ Foam ear plugs are great for plugging up the lines to help minimize spillage..

    20220918_165942.jpg

    Deutsch Connectores installed..

Weatherproof relay with Deutsch Connectors made up to control the fan..
    20220918_183629.jpg

Needed to relocate the horns to the Passenger side because the size of the Mishimoto Trans Cooler..
    20220918_182608.jpg

Tomorrow this guy will get installed on the Out Bound trans line that goes to the Trans Cooler, it will house a Temperature Sender from my Transmission Fluid Temperature Guage..

Getting closer to the goal of having a Overly Built Cooling System..

Deleted the Factory Clutch Fan, and installed a General Motors OEM Factory PWM controlled Spal 18" Electric Fan that's used on Corvettes and Camaro's. Sounds like a Jet Turbine when the Manual Override is Switched to On. The Manual Override commands the fan to turn at 100% Duty Cycle.

Verifying proper functions of the Lingenfelter Controller, ECT sensor and settings of 130* Starting Temp and 210* Max Temp.. all good, fan kicked on right around the 130 mark.

Verifying proper function of the built in FAIL SAFE Mode that if the module looses communication with the ECT sensor , the fan will automatically go to 100%.. works like as it should
    [IMG]

Testing the White Wire Manual Over-Ride with a added Switch that will command the Fan to 100% Duty cycle. Can be configured to either 12v or a negative ground switch. For now, I have mine configured for a negative trigger. There's about a 3 - 4 second delay from flipping the switch to On for the fan to start turning. Takes approximately 10 seconds for the fan once it starts to ramp up to 100% Duty Cycle. Blows incredibly fast at full speed!!

The back side of the Ligenfelter Fan Controller and the DIP settings..

    Front Side of the Controller..

    Today's driveway project...

    Rack And Pinion #4

New OEM Rack And Pinions are currently unavailable anywhere to be found for the 2nd Gen Tacomas. Next best thing is a Factory Remanufactured Unit, and those are hard to find..
    20230304_094458.jpg

Also replacing Upper Control Arm Bushings and Outer Heim Joints..

Total Chaos Fab Upper Control Arm Bushings will fit the AllPro Off-Road Upper Control Arm Bushings.
