How serious is it to drive long distances at highway speeds on a new Tacoma?

Bought a 22 SR5 out of state, and as soon as I signed I drove 600 miles back home.

How shitty is that for the engine? Should I be worried about it and/or should I be looking out for any issues that can arise because of that long trip?

I would trade it in for another at a dealer closer to you, don’t risk it.

Read the manual. Vary speeds for 1000 miles. Don't hard brake. Did you do that? Yes? You are fine.

Should have followed the break-in guidelines in your owners manual. I have a feeling it will say not to drive at the same speed for a specified period of time.

Well I read the manual, so telling me what I should have done ore stating what the break in period suggestions are helps no one.

I bought out of state, and had no other option but to drive my truck 600m back home. My question was.....how legitimate of a concern is going against the suggested break in period? And what issues can arise from long trips on a new engine? If you don't have any knowledge on those two questions then save everyone some time and effort and just skip replying lol..

The answer could be A) nothing, or B) future excessive oil consumption...only time will tell. The real issue is the proper seating of the piston rings. A constant speed and load is not a good break-in procedure. So...there is your answer.

Welcome to TW. You’ll find that this happens often around here, and that only people with thick skin remain around here.

You’re missing a lot of info.

Did you take frequent breaks? Did you vary your speed a lot? What was your max speed?

I drove my Tacoma home 160 miles when I bought it, and made sure I never went above 60mph and I kept varying my speed between 50 and 60mph the entire time. I also took a break every 45 minutes for about 20 minutes, and never floored it to accelerate.

Up to 1,000 miles I never went above 60mph, and never floored it or made abrupt stops.

Now that I’m at 1200 miles, I drive normally.

This is how I broke in my 2010 Tacoma when I bought it back in 2009 and it never had an issue in 13 years, so I’m hoping my approach works with my 2022.

You had the option to cary your speed for 600 miles.
Probably, if you think about it, you drive 10 hours. Out of that 10 hours, how much was interstate at 70 mph? How many times did you stop, slow down, eat, etc?

Drive it in reverse back to the dealer that should cancel out the first trip then drive it back home following break in guidelines

    This.

    It’ll also reverse the mileage

Thanks for the clarification and the answers. Assuming I'm just being a little bit of a nervous nancy cuz its my first new vehicle. But again, appreciate the replies and I'll make sure to tell my tech to take a look at the oil when he changes it to make sure theres nothing noticeable in it.

I think you'll be fine. Not the best of situations but not the worst by any means.
Surely you had to stop for gas and food and other unmentionables -

I did the same thing with new 2012 Patriot years ago and it present no problems.
I would lose no sleep over it.

I wouldn't worry about it. I live in WA. and had to drive to Montana to pick up mine. 5 hour drive. I'm at 30k miles, engine is fine.
