Power Windows -3 of 4 stopped working suddenly

Just got my son a 04 Double Cab. Two days ago, 3 of 4 power windows stopped responding. Driver door rolls down driver window but driver door also won't roll down other three windows. Each door won't roll down it's own window either. My son said he was driving it and heard a "crackling" from front passenger door then noticed the symptom.

I've checked 30A fuse under steering wheel, what would I check next?

I've read of a master switch (where?) and in-door switches.

If at all possible find a copy of the Toyota Electrical Wiring Diagrams for your year Tacoma.

Toyota calls them Double Cab.

The Master Switch is the Drivers Door !

All the other window switches have 2 sets of contacts that allow operation from the Master Switch and the Window switch.

Wires tend to break in between the cab and door .

My first step check for voltage on the right front door switch key on right door switch depressed then goo from there.

 

If only the driver's window works & not the other 3, that happens when the window lock button is engaged. I would check that button first to see it's stuck or faulty. I suspect a bad master window switch.

Don't bother looking up the price for a new OEM one, they're stupid expensive. There's aftermarket ones, some are pretty good, & not expensive. But the aftermarket ones come with a green LED that lights up the Auto indicator if that matters to you. Couldn't find one with amber LED. And that green LED is a SMD so can't swap it with the stock LED.

I ended up replacing mine from another Toyota. I forget which years but certain gen Camrys & Avalons use the same master switch, just need to reuse your bezel. Oh & they come green too but I swapped the orange LED fine.

 

Yeah I was going to say did you accidentally press down the square button on the panel with the orange square and X (the printing may have worn off) it's extremely unusual for 3 to fail at once but sounds like the child saftey window disable button is pressed down.

It's kinda easy to miss especially if you don't know what it does.

 

There you go, I was having a brain fart & couldn't remember what to call it. It's too damn hot, can't think!

 

yea.. make sure the lock switch isnt on. this uh.. happens alot at work.

 

Take out the master switch and check out the contacts, my original ones were burnt black. I picked up one from eBay years ago, had to do a minor plastic shave on it to fit it. But as I said, that was years ago...

I tend to forget the window lock switch because i bump mine all the time.

So if the right window does not work I just check the lock switch without thinking.

 

That was it! The window lock switch.

I put too much stock in the "crackling" sound he said he heard from the passenger side thinking it was a short somewhere. When he got home I check it and that solved it.

We can postpone that replacement for another day.
