I like it! I was looking for an inexpensive lathe to turn a couple basic parts for work, nothing bigger than a 6" OD... can it do threads?

I just remembered that I saw a Super Duty on 6x6 Rockwell axles yesterday. Missed getting a picture because we were going opposite directions.

    It was very big.

Yes but it doesn't have a full quick change gearbox. Need to change gears for certain pitches. It covers most of the imperial pitches I commonly need to thread though without changing gears. Does metric too which also require some gear reconfiguring.

It's been good to me & pretty much has done everything I needed. I'd like to replace it someday but it's not high on my list. If it were today I'd probably buy something else. Back then almost 14 yrs ago it was worth it to me.

Hmmm I'll have to dive into it more later. Biggest threads we do are 1"-14 but I've been trying to convince the owner to go all metric since we buy alot of European components. I try to explain to him (from a technician standpoint) needing both metric and SAE tools to work on something is a pain in the ass. But he's old skool thinking and all he knows is SAE.

Yeah good luck with that, he probably won't change. Lol. If you needed to thread mostly metric it would make more sense to buy a lathe with metric leadscrews. Most anything newer you buy in the US is gonna have imperial leadscrews. Of course you can thread metric pitches with imperial leadscrews, you just can't use the threading dial & halfnuts. Well you can, there's a trick on how to do it, & is how I do it but still would be much easier with metric leadscrew. Or find a big industrial lathe that does it all.

When it comes to single point threading on the lathe, I prefer using imperial threads, well cause my lathe has imperial leadscrews, & imperial measurements is what I'm used to. If I have to machine something with metric measurements I convert to imperial. All my measuring tools are imperial. Tell me 15 thou & I have an idea. Tell me 0.15mm & I'll have no idea what you are talking about. Metric is a foreign language to me. I'll never convert.

But the funny thing is when it comes to fasteners, I prefer using metric fasteners. My sockets & wrenches, metric. I hate using imperial fasteners. I'll only use them if I'm working on something that already has imperial fasteners, like I won't use metric if I needed to modify something that's US made/imperial. That's a pet peeve of mine. And vise versa, if it has metric, it stays metric.

Oh no he never will haha. That's why I just gotta wait for him to retire so I can make different decisions... or go and start my own equipment company:anonymous:

That's an interesting point on the metric leadscrews, I hadn't considered that key difference (as I was predominantly a CNC machinist and only messed with manuals in school) that piece of info will help change my searching thank you

I prefer metric for everything and I believe it was described best by the author Josh Bazell in the book "Wild Things"

-In metric, one milliliter of water occupies one cubic centimeter, weighs one gram, and requires one calorie of energy to heat up by one degree centigrade—which is 1 percent of the difference between its freezing point and its boiling point. An amount of hydrogen weighing the same amount has exactly one mole of atoms in it. Whereas in the American system, the answer to ‘How much energy does it take to boil a room-temperature gallon of water?’ is ‘Go fuck yourself,’ because you can’t directly relate any of those quantities.
