4.0 leaking coolant waterpump

06 tacoma with the v6 im almost at 60000 miles and went out this morning and found colant leaking down the front of the engine. Is this a known problem or am i just lucky?? also any good links for the removal and repalce of the water pump since that seems to be the coulprit. Thanks for reading

 

thats the first ive heard of that happening. replacing a water pump is a big job and big money.

At 60000 miles? Its a bit early, but not unheard of. SO yes, known problem

Any waterpump you don't have to have a special tool for or remove the radiator is an "easy" water pump to replace. But holy shit with the bolt pattern on that piece. AND 5 bypass hoses...
Yea. Not hard, but I bet it's a bit of a 3 legged one. Bet there's a lot of "tricks" getting in there and getting room to move etc.

 

Toyota's water pumps normally fail at the seal. Mine went at 30k. Of all the pumps I have replaced, the front wheel drives were the hardest; very little room for your hands. RWD vehicles are much easier.
Drain, pull belts and hoses, remove fan, replace pump... Reverse. Take your time and have a friend with a running vehicle! Oh yea... and verify you have the right parts BEFORE you start

 

The waterpump replacement should be covered by powertrain warranty up to 60,000mi or 5 years. If your not over 60k I would check your in service date to see if it's under 5 years. (it is covered in Canada up to 100,000kms or 5 years).

 

found out first day of use on my truck was in april so i was still within warranty by the seam of my pants. Waterpump r2 no questions asked. Just another reason why i love toyota..

 

+1 for extended warranty. I can work on my truck, but I'd have to pay for parts, special tools, rental, auto hobby shop..... It was a safe bet for me.

 

I just went thru this at 65000. I bought an oem waterpump but found out it was covered thru my extended plan even tho it was an absolute nightmare and they fucked me hard lol... should have done it myself.. would have been done faster


But anyway I do have a brand new oem Toyota waterpump ill give ya a deal on lol... dealer wants crazy restock fee.. rather just give someone a deal

Very common, had my weep hole start to show the "red crust" at around 53k.

Anyone reading this who is still under 60k should be checking the water pump often to ensure they catch it as soon as it shows signs of leaking. Just shine a flashlight down under the pumps pulley.

The replacement job is not hard, just time consuming. Have a torque wrench, couple cans of break cleaner and bunch of patience.

 

Lucky you don't have to look for it to know its leaking. Unlike oil, coolant has a strong odor and you smell it immediately.

 

Ya, not so much.

Look for it and if it has a seal that recently went bad, you will see the red residue. The leaking starts a while later.

 

You can't smell antifreeze? I do have a reputation for smelling it "first". But its pretty noticeable.

 

Gotta have a good nose. I can only smell leaky heater cores. Engine bay leaks have to be big for me to smell it.

 

I'm always smelling them. Checking my car after following someone down the highway. Must be a smell I'm particularly sensitive to.

I know this is kinda an old thread but just noticed I have the pink antifreeze drunning down the front of the motor. It dont look to fresh since its kinda white in some spots where it might have been there a while. So I assume this water pump needs to be replaced. It looks as though the stuff is coming from behind the fan. So does the drain hole for the water pump drain behind the motor fan. Im not quite sure. Any help would be appreciated. Thanx
