I've got a new (4 weeks) 2022 Tacoma TRD Offroad.

    I noticed a notable thing:

Once a few weeks ago, as I approached the vehicle, I heard the door(s) unlock. I've got all the beeps turned off, so I just heard the clunk. Sure enough, the drivers door (at least) was unlocked. "Weird" I thought. Maybe it's a feature, or I bumped the button on the fob.

Happened again this morning. So I relocked, walked away came back being careful not to touch the button on the fob, and approached the vehicle as I otherwise normally. As soon as I touched the door handle, "clunk" - the door was unlocked.

Thoughts? Is this supposed to happen? Do I have Magneto-like super powers?

The door is supposed to unlock when you grab the door handle.

    Oh look, another mod....

I am curious....were you bitten by a radio active spider recently? If so, I think I know what your problem is!

Oh, you don't have to touch the keyfob to unlock the doors, there's a proximity sensor that detects the keyfob on you. You can change the settings in the infotainment system.

I believe this setting can also be turned off through the settings menus on the head unit.

You can also lock it by tapping the three little lines on the front of the handle.

    Wow! Nice!

Looks like somebody didn’t read the manual.

Seems like your dealer didn't ask you about walking you through the features of smart system ( such as smart key, handle, etc.) on the truck or you didn't ask him to walk you through.

Yup and in the case top lines do not work due winter comes in such as ice or snow, there are lines under the handle as well.

I first noticed this feature on wife’s 2014 Prius 4 and I’ve seen it on Lexus going further back. We are spoiled by these creature comforts. Another quick way if you don’t have manual handy? YouTube model year Tacoma hidden features and see what comes up.

All the above and of course your key fab needs to be near by the truck.

Interior lights will come on as you approach as well (prior to touching the handle or unlocking via the fob)

Another Fob tip is if your Fob battery dies, hold the Fob against the Push To Start button and the truck will start. Welcome to TW. Hope you are enjoying your 4 week old truck.

    Very good info.

I'm not sure about the range being 300 feet the fob emits a signal. (Mentioned in the YouTube video)

I hang my fob key by our garage door entrance from the inside and have tried to unlock my truck by grabbing the handle without my fob...testing the range of the Fob...which is about 30 feet away. It does not unlock.

I'd have to look up Fob operation in my owner's manual to see what the actual range is to unlock/lock my door.

The 300ft range is likely without any interference...like an insulated wall and/or garage door, etc...

Page 132 of owner's manual states: within about 2.3 ft (.07m) the system can be operated--either of the outside front door handles.

I tested it by placing my Fob on my wife's sunroof which was about 3.5ft away and put my hand in the passenger side handle...no action.

I grabbed the Fob and brought it 1ft closer and viola, it opened and locked.

At the bottom of page 133, the battery saving function is mentioned.

Couldn't help but have a friendly laugh with OP.

What you won't find in the owner manual is the FOB can remote start too, nice to know once the 1-year phone access trial expires.
