    Hey Guys,

just reading these threads and my understanding is some of are getting 18-19mpg with 5:29s in your 3rd gen with factory tires?

I have a 21 pro with with just slightly bigger than factory tires running 5:29s and I get 14mpg driving like a grandma. I am using the 85/140 oil. Any suggestions?

Local town driving (e.g. stop and go) and anything over 65mph will reduce mpg.

The folks getting 18-19 (even myself at times) are running mostly highway at 55-65 on mostly flat ground

    All of them.
This is the biggest killer. When I was living in CA and drove 80 everywhere I couldn't get better than 14mpg. 33s, 35s, 5.29s, tune. Nothing really helped. Moved to New Hampshire where I rarely go above 55 I'm getting 19mpg with full armor, winch, camper shell, swing out bumper and 35s.

Right. I thought someone was saying they were getting 18mpg at 70mph. I plan on going to 35s.

I get 18 occasionally, definitely not average though. I was getting 17 average with 5.29s and 33s, 35s have reduced it a bit.

Will the gear oil make much of a difference?

Not really. But there are some anecdotes.

I don’t know what tune I have. Something chad @Chadr7858 made.

I have tried a few tunes from different people and I’m not really sure what the difference between them are.

I appreciate the replies. I am gonna go to 35’s and hopefully that drops my rpm’s and helps a little.

I was up in the bay area. When I first got my gears my truck would shut down at 89mph. I was a issue I wouldn't have believed if I didn't experience the limiter. Had no idea the flow of traffic was 90+ all the time.

Every time I’m in the Bay Area or anywhere in California I’m usually stuck in traffic.

5.29's or 4.88's will be just fine. I was in your shoes and went 5.29. Glad I did as I ended up maxing out my little Tacoma with a four wheel camper. Wasn't planning on that at all, but it happened. Plan for the future and get the 5.29's!

Hm... So your mpgs dropped by going 35s from 33s? I was hoping the increased circumference would drop the rpms a bit and improve mpgs. Was your 35s much heavier? How much did rpms drop going 70mph from 33s to 35s?

I have 35's, 5.29 with 85w/140 Lucas oil. Prior to the Lucas oil addition, pre break-in, I was getting 17 and 1/2 mpg...possible more since my odometer is not recalibrated. Post break-in with Lucas oil, a bit more aggressive driving I get around 15 mpg.
I notice when I drive below 65, around 60, I get 17mpg. Anything above 65 and I start losing mpg's. Point is , keep it around 60 mph to see 17ish mpg with 35's. I also shift below 3k rpm (MT). I have steel bumpers and spare tire....

then again, my truck isn't my DD so who cares about mpg :bikewhoops:
