I'm in total agreement with that, it definitely shouldn't happen on any engine from any manufacturer. It's a gamble most of us take by not buying extended warranties, luckily a gamble that the OP didn't take.

One failure is not proof of anything, no matter how badly you want it to be.

That’s the most concerning part. They don’t even seem to care about making a quality product or learning from mistakes. It’s not like your truck had 200K on it. It only had 65K and shouldn’t have had a catastrophic failure. I think it will get to the point soon that we won’t want to own a vehicle beyond the factory warranty.

That would be great for them, they sell more cars that way. That is until a company comes along and actually gives a shit about quality and reliability and the rest will be left out in the cold cuddling up with their piles of cash from previous decades until they get bought out or go away for good.

Toyota made themselves famous on the concept of kaizen, continuous improvement.

It might be that they already know the cause of this type of failure, having built engines for decades and used the 2GR lineup in production cars for almost 20 years. In that time I'm sure they've seen and studied this failure before.

Do we think it being alum vs cast caused it to fail?

Agreed, but sometimes shit does happen and that's why there is a warranty period. I don't want to do that math of how many of these engines have been produced but given the huge range of models Toyota/Lexus uses it in I'm sure its in the millions. I doubt it's a common problem.

I mean, if the engine block cracking isn't major then there's nothing to see here.

Cast wouldn’t have cracked due to defective head gasket. Would’ve just fucked the head or heads at most

Small lift, slightly oversized tires, well...
Back in '81, my dad's GMC 3/4 ton pickup spun a rod bearing. It was almost exactly 1 month out of warranty. When the engine was torn down, not only was the bearing and crank bad, the cam and several lifters had severe wear. GM wouldn't pay, argued abuse, neglect, bad oil, you name it. Dad payed out of pocket to fix. Mechanic that did the work (and quit about 3 weeks later) told my dad to press the issue. Said that if GM didn't have a problem, why did the dealer have 6 long blocks on the shelf?

Parents stirred the pot and stirred the pot. Found out GM had changed their hardening procedures on cranks, cams and lifters and were having a lot of failures. In the end, GM reimbursed my parents their cost to shut them up.

    I haven't bought a GM product since and won't.

Right. The 2.7 were cast and the 3.5 are alum IIRC

The head gasket failed and let coolant into the cylinder, right? If the cylinder wall hadn't given out to relieve the pressure the next thing to go would likely have been the connecting rod with the obviously catastrophic failure to follow.

Unfortunately the modern Diesel engine currently sold in US passenger cars and trucks has become significantly less reliable than a few years ago due to newer air emission requirements. I perceive it is possible that gasoline engines will suffer a similar fate in the near future.

That’s even worse if they know it’s a problem and don’t want to do anything about it.
