Water has been getting into that cylinder for awhile notice how clean the piston is. I think the liner crack was the effect not the cause.

The interesting thing here is those are all basically cars / minivans / so called SUV's with the exception of the Tacoma? HMMM WT*?

I was wondering that myself! WT* was going on there? It bacame a steam engine before it gave up the ghost? I was thinking of getting a new Tundra, it would be the first Toyota I'd get the extended warranty on. I'm sure the cost would be very high for that on top of the very High cost of the truck? Maybe I'll just keep my old school Tacoma? Its rock solid! At least the drivetrain anyway.

Wow. That sounds comforting. Do you just hope and pray your engine isn’t one of the 1200 that blows. I’m not a fan of Russian Roulette with my vehicles. I’ve also never bought an extended warranty on anything.

Statement is sort of irrelevant as the percentage of failures is unknown. What if its 5%?

I get your point, but my example was to point out that:
    • The expectation of a 0% failure rate for anything that is mass produced is unrealistic and cost prohibitive to achieve
    • Drawing generalizations about quality and reliability based on outlier data is not valid.
I understand that the only factual number in my example was the 2021 Tacoma sales data. The rest was illustrative to make a point. It could be less or more than 0.5%, but I seriously doubt it's the majority.

Essentially yes. You take that chance with any vehicle, any machine, any mass produced item that you purchase. What you've decided is that with your Taco the chances are low enough that you are comfortable self-insuring for failures not covered by a factory warranty.

There isn’t really any new midsize truck I really like right now but if I were to total my current truck tomorrow I would most likely go with a new Frontier. Maybe for the same money try to get a new Santa Cruz for a daily and a used full-size truck for truck things.

    That’s even worse.
Are there many other new vehicles blowing engines just out of warranty like this? I haven’t heard about it.
I don’t understand how any of you can be OK with this happening. It’s odd. Stockholm Syndrome?

Anyways, thanks for helping solidify my argument by creating your thread. These engines are failing. How many, only Toyota knows.

The Bronco is being investigated by NHTSA for engines blowing. There have been only 12 in total that blew, but enough people made a fuss.

Of course other engines are blowing in and out of warranty... but you didn't hear about them because you're not looking for them. Search any car plus blown engine and you're going to find examples.

The same with all of you claiming this didn't happen to old Toyotas. Of course it did. You just didn't hear about it unless it happened to be you or someone you actually knew.

I'm not excusing this or saying it's OK. But sometimes shit happens and when it does you have every right to be pissed about it.

People need to justify in their own head, the 45k they spent to get world class reliability. Toyota uses its history of reliability to push sales but in all reality they aren't much different than any other manufacturer at this point.

Again we have no idea how many failures really happen. Maybe more or less issues than other midsize truck manufactures. We can all argue back and forth but none of us know the real answer.

My local dealer said they do a lot of timing cover re-seals both under warranty and out of warranty. If you went to the dealer with an oil leak at 62k and they tell you, you need a $4000 repair, you wont be signing the reliability praises anymore. Toyota knows it's an issue but they won't do anything about it.

Point is Toyota is not what it used to be in terms of reliability and customer service.

See my 2006 Colorado shitfest in this thread, 20 plus years and never again will I own GM as a daily.

Based on the extended test drive (2 month rental) of a 2019 or 2020 Frontier DCSB last year I'd consider it, at least enough to dig deeper in research. Not that config as it's more truck than I have need or use of though

Maybe at 160-something K, it's one thing. Not at 63K.

Hell even the 70s-80s engines one could assume 100K before any major failure assuming you took average care of it maintainence wise and didn't do stupid shit

Still better odds than catching a STD... But I don't see people slowing down the amount of sex they're having...

I'll take those odds! And I never buy extended warranties for anything either.

Would you rather catch herpes or have your Tacoma blow up right outside of warranty? Honest question.

:rofl:At least with herpes you get to do your own risk assessment based on the situation and get some luvin in the deal. No luvin comes from the blown motor

I had a Pro4 for a weekly rental last month. I liked it. The engine and transmission felt good.
