I told ya I'd drive home a PRO over this! 2 cylinders failed leak down test. Only 16K miles.

    UPDATE...
Just got a call from the Dealer. Truck is repaired and running. Today as promised.
They said the Tech is asking if I mind if he keeps it overnight. Drives it home putting a few miles on it.
And brings it back in the morning just to makes sure no leaks or any issues overnight.
I asked how many is a few miles? They said probably 40-50. I said I have no issues with that.

I need to run some gas out of the Carola anyways.

An answer worthy of The Three Stooges,

"I wouldn't say yes, but I couldn't say no." "Would you say maybe?" "I might!" (Curly and Larry)

I've driven way more miles than that since i bought my truck used in 2020. It had 9,800 on it then, and is closing in on 57K now. I'm sure Toyota wouldn't do a thing for me, but OTOH i've been doing business with he same dealer for 20+ years, so maybe they would.

Well, I look at it this way. I'd rather them find any possible issues before I pick it up.

    And.

I trusted the man enough to pull the engine apart and put it back together.
Surely to God I can trust him enough to drive it.

Trying to compare Kmart/Sears to Toyota is a pretty hefty leap. Toyota is currently a successful company, period, with no indication of being on any kind of downward trend. There have been some anecdotes shared in this thread about corporate not doling out extended warranties in some cases where there were premature failures but they are just anecdotes. I’ve also personally heard plenty of anecdotes in which Toyota did give out an extended warranty or cover something that was just outside warranty.

    Sears failed because:
    1) it was originally (and successfully) based around a catalog business and never innovated/evolved to modern retail.
    2) it acquired a lot of non-retail related entities that interfered with a focus on retail.
    3) the economy changed, favoring discount retailers like Walmart. This has been mainly due to the stagnation of wage value over time, the shrinking middle class, and the increasing distance between the haves and have nots. People just couldn’t afford Sears any more.
    4) taking on Kmart in the merger. Kmart was not a strong business at the time, this just accelerated the decline of the company.
    5) failure to modernize. The stores were renovated much less frequently than other retailers and just looked shoddy and unappealing, particularly Kmart locations.

None of the above has any parallel to Toyota.

(facepalm) Yeah, yeah, yeah... we can all nit pick differences until the cows come home, but all companies have their heyday and eventually sink. Just like the Titanic and your grandmother's breasts had nothing in common but both took a dive. You're a smart lad, but your word salad belongs in a gathering of like minded people scrambling for oxygen and willing to hire someone on which to blame future developments.

Beancounters are useful, just like lawyers... but anyone listening to them better have a higher regard for marketing and customer confidence.

Well lesson learned. You have a higher chance of hitting the lottery than your engine failing early. But some people like @TRD-ED did hit the lottery of blown engines. Best to get that extended warranty just in case. I hate warranties, but the next Toyota I buy new, will be getting the powertrain warranty. These engines cost way too much to repair.

Yes, there is. I will be driving home in an Army Green Pro.
The Dealer will hand me the keys to it tomorrow. They will also throw in an Army Green Meso key fob.

But in a good way....Failure to modernize(hopefully) helps with reliability.

Sorry, but drum brakes on a new truck in 2022 is not a failure to modernize in a good way. Neither is using a "dumb" tpms system that needs to be programed with ID of new sensors.

Well, remember that in the case of Sears/Kmart we’re talking about store renovations. The stores started to look old and crappy, whereas competitors were renovating their stores much more frequently. Retail shoppers like an attractive shopping environment. The company also failed to modernize along the lines of online sales, their web site was horrible.

Moving back over to Toyota, what’s the parallel, something that specifically is leading to the downfall of the company? I think we can all agree that in Tacomas, Toyota does not fill them with the fanciest, most modern interior gadgets available. The trucks have been left fairly utilitarian. I’d argue that’s one of the attractions for many. And it hasn’t hurt sales.

Will be interested to hear your point of view.

I always thought that those stores got demolished by Amazon. Won't call it a failure to modernize, just got eaten by a bigger fish.
