Dobinsons 2016-2023 Taco Suspension Options

looks great. I’m in NJ also and am starting to consider new coils since my OME 887 didn’t give me the 2”+ I kind of wanted. What coils did you end up getting ? @Crikeymike what coils work best with ome nitro chargers, medium load for 2.5” lift ?

 

I see, so is the photo of the rebound clip basically just showing that you need one with enough room to support the additional leaf? Does the bolt on these need to be removed, or can it be left in place?

 

I'd say you need to change springs to bring it down. Probably the 300s or 302s depending what height you want. Adding the bumper will reduce it a bit and make it feel better but a 2wd definitely needs shorter springs than a 4x4

 

There aren't 2.5" lighter load coils. Using 302s and 220 struts gives 2.5" with stock weight. 314s on your struts will only give 2"

 

@Crikeymike Im looking into 3 inch lift, My truck is stock weight and i plan on keeping it that way, it seems like the 314's with the 220 shocks would achieve that.But, is there much behind the idea that the lift will settle and lower over time? would it not be a good idea to use the 352's or 350's with the 220 shocks to prevent this?

 

That setup sits at and stays at 3". I've never had any issues with sagging, unless someone adds more weight, or if it's a different variation other than a DCSB.

Don't use coils that don't suit your weight.

If I went from GS59-940 to GS59-941 rear shocks to gain the longer travel, would the rear suspension height also be increased?

When I went from GS59-221 to GS59-220 on the front shocks, I gained an inch of lift.

@Crikeymike Which UCA would you recommend for the extended travel struts?

 

Front struts have a coil that sits on top of them, so that affected the lift height.

In the rear, the leaf springs only set the lift height, and the shocks are separate and don't affect the lift height.

If you do the longer rear shocks, you have to add brake lines and longer bump stops so they don't bottom out early.

 

The Dobinsons handle the extra travel just fine. Fully maintenance free, and give a nice smooth ride too compared to other arms with poly bushings and uniballs.

Some people that work on cars get it confused as well, as rear cars can have struts that can affect the lift height as well, but not on 4x4's.

I have a quick question. I have a 2wd with 314’s and 220’s up front and l59-111 leaf pack in the rear. It rides great on smooth roads, a bit stiff on bumps but I have a bumper on order which will hopefully resolve that.

I was thinking about adding a Maxtrac spindle lift to my set up. Foresee any issues or changes needed beside brake lines and maybe drive shaft extension and carrier drop I would need if I go with the lift? @Crikeymike

 

I don't think there would be any issues.

Yeah, a bit of weight to bring it down some would make it ride better.

 

Does anybody have instructions on where the L59-123-R add a leaf spring sit on the L59-112-R pack.

 

It becomes the 6th leaf down from the top when installed. The part number of it ends in 6, which is the position designation.

 

@Crikeymike This has likely been answered somewhere in the previous 76 pages, but that's a lot of reading. For the front end of a gen2 Tacoma, it looks like the MRA Extended travel suggests 0-3.5" lift and the IMS suggests 1.75-3.0, what is the extended and collapsed length of each or why the difference? I'm deep enough into my planning phase that I have too many questions to keep my head on straight and I'm getting caught up in details that likely are not as important as other points. Spreadsheets open and blah blah blah. Other than adjustable of MRR/MRA, what would be buying points of the MRR over the IMS? Coming from decades in MTB, I see the value in the adjustable but my pocket book has many other holes in it other than my truck.

The struts don't dictate the height, it's where you set the coil seat that matters, and then what height coils you use with them. You could use either one with stock coils at stock height if you wanted to, but no one does that.

The 3-way adjustment is the biggest benefit. Other than that, cooling with more oil and external reservoir are the only other benefits over IMS. They both share the same body, height adjustment, rod and piston design with IFP.

 

@Crikeymike Sorry for not being all too clear, the specs on the first page do not match the items on your site, unfortunately the dobinsons page doesn't have specs either. Various other pages on your site have various details. Liking to quote movies "Just the fax".

There is a 9mm difference in ext length and 13mm in compressed length between what is on the first page and on the link where I'd actually select the item to place the order. Keep in mind 9mm is 3/4" more droop which is a hug percentage of the available travel on a Tacoma. Suspension top out is going to be limited by the bumpstop not at full compression limit of the shock. I'm just looking for facts for an item I'm considering purchasing. Where did these numbers come from? Why are they different in various places? Were they measured or did they sound good?
