I have the mid torque, and its never failed me, but I've only really done suspension work. high torque does sound fun though.

 

I have the $25 one from harbor freight. First one I bought didn't work out of the box, returned it for a new one and it's worked great for a few years now.

 

Well shit, I might just go get it tomorrow.

Is it good or strong enough to grind down some mild steel? Just need to make something more aesthetically pleasing.

 

I use my angle grinder to knock down bigger stuff. Honestly it's better for body work and cleaning up smaller stuff. It would probably work OK for that.

 

I've got angle grinders.

No angle grinder is going to reach inside under that hitch though. A flap disc is too wide even.

For $25 though, that's too cheap to not try.

 

A mini belt sander might be better suited for that. (I didn't realize what I was looking at before )

 

Shit, didn't know that was a thing...those are tiny.

I had considered one of those pneumatic pencil die grinder for a moment.

 

I tried one of those to get at some welds in a hard to reach spot and it sucked but it might have been the medium I was using

I had this idea of breaking up the bland smooth face of my diy rear bumper. Figured I'd recess the hitch slightly.

I ran the torch a little hot on my plasma cutter and didn't get the best cut even though it was "pretty square"



Once welded together, that's where the imperfections stood out most.

I bought a cheap Chinese electric die grinder when I did my coastal build. Bought some cheapo flap discs and bits. Worked okay for what I needed (grinding in tight spots). Haven't really needed to use it since the bumper build though, so not sure how long it'll hold up...

 

It's a little hard to control but for something like that I have has best luck with a dremel and carbide burr. Can get pretty surgical with it and I have cut through 3/8's with it. The damn metal that kicks off is like fiberglass fibers though and itches like a mother fucker.

 

Was looking at the pneumatic version of said grinder.

Needs like 7cfm at 90psi which is what my compressor is rated at. Going air I assume it'll be a lot stronger. Did you use the bits provided or buy your own?

 

No bits were provided, I bought some off Amazon. They worked okay, but wouldn't use them for removing a ton of material. I mostly used them to oval out a few bolt holes for better fitment of the bumper and they did the trick. I bought these...

I have the 3/8 stubby, the mid torque and the high torque because I use them every day. The high torque is a wrist breaker, so watch out. I couldn't use it all day for everything because my wrists would be so sore, but when something's too tight for the mid torque, like ubolt nuts that are seized, nothing beats the high torque zinging them off like nothing.

 

yea, would be nice to have the high torque to pull out on stubborn nuts, and force them into submission, but i haven't actually needed that yet haha. It would be an expensive purchase for what amounts to an insurance policy for me.

 

Definitely can see that being an issue if it's used a lot, hell even the weight of it would kill my arms after a while. Do you even lift bro? No, no I don't.

Swapping out all my mid travel front & rear suspension back to stock over the last month or 3 with the 1/4" hex impact got old quick. Had to break the big stuff loose by hand & then use the baby impact. Well it almost got the job done...until it didn't. Can't fault the driver for this failure, but it was the reminder I needed that I was tempting fate using that baby driver on suspension fittings.

Nice metal yielding there. I love looking at metal failure points so neat. What brand was this and was it impact rated?

 

I'm curious to how you like it vs an electric one. My experience with air powered die grinders even with a compressor that can keep up is that when things get really hard to cut they bog down hard.
