I did a search and didn't see this topic, if it's been covered already, I'm sorry. So, I'm new to the Tacoma world, I just bought my 2020 4door 4cyl at what I think was a fair price. I've wanted one for quite some time. One thing I do "not" like is the PSC. Even though I have followed the steps according to the Toyota Manual, by temporarily disabling the PCS, it still won't do it. I don't mind the lane departure beep, but if for example, I'm cruising and the car in front of me moves to the lane to my right, clearly no longer in my path, and then hit their brakes to turn right, the truck applies the brakes as if they're directly in front of me.
My question is, can the PCS be permanently disabled? If so, how?
Thanks in advance....more "newbie" questions soon

Easy way - unplug the grille sensor and put a piece of electrical tape over the dash warning light.

Proper way - it can be disabled through techstream, though some say that it's either permanent or really difficult to reenable should you ever change your mind or go to sell.

My 18 does not do that. You might take it to the dealer and log a complaint and have them look at it. It's a safety issue if the truck is braking with no car in front of you.

Don’t use the radar cruise control. Read your owners manual.

My 2020 has done that since day one. Only if a vehicle was in front of me, then that vehicle merged into a turn lane and immediately applied the brakes. I've learned to cancel the cruise control if I see someone doing that.

Op, you can disable adaptive cruise control by holding down the button, rather than pressing and releasing, to turn on cruise control.

The pre collision system sucks...period. I disabled mine as in post #2, and much happier for it.

I was able to change how sensitive mine is and adjust the warnings on my 21. I forget where but it's somewhere in the settings. Also disabled the lane beep - I couldn't stand that.

IMO the system was extremely over-sensitive stock and would yell at me to STOP on all info screens in the truck whenever someone got a little close in front of me, which is often in AZ. I was very in control of the truck and not tailgating.. the system is just annoying. Reminds me of the traction control on my old Mazda, which almost got me into several accidents before I figured out how to disable that as well. Excessive safety features are great for the masses who are on their phones and distracted, but can't outperform a driver that knows what he's doing and is paying attention.

Did they change how the pre collision system works from 2019 to 2020? my understanding is all the systems (pre collision, lane departure, blind spot) are just warnings and don't actually control anything.

i have adaptive cruise control that will apply the brakes if i get too close to a car or they swerve or something, but thats the point of adaptive cruise control.

Honestly I thought this too during my entire first year of ownership. Eventually I got annoyed by it enough that I slowly started increasing distance until the truck stopped bitching at me.

After another year, my habits were recalibrated enough to look back at my past and admit that I really was a chronic tailgater. :anonymous::anonymous: It'll happen to you too.

Nah.. it's over-sensitive lol. It would yell at me while I was already in the process of slowing down from great distances behind people. Maybe it's calibrated to work with the really awful oem brakes which were scary bad. I upgraded mine with 1000 miles on the truck, makes a noticeable difference. I don't like cars controlling what I do. If the truck had that crap that fights the steering wheel to keep you in your lane or a start/stop I never would have purchased it. At least I was able to get around this one.

I hate the whole dang PCS system myself. When I drove my 2019 home from the dealer, when I got into my small town, where most of the speed limits are 25mph, I set it on cruise control, or what I 'thought', was cruise control. It turned out to be the stupid Adaptive Cruise Control, which as you mentioned, makes the truck slam on the brakes no matter how sensitive you set the dang thing at! I wanted cruise control around town because of the dang cops who write tickets for 30 in a 25, believe it or not, so I just set it on cruise and don't worry about their candy asses. But once I read the manual, I learned about what I call "CLASSIC CRUISE CONTROL", which as others here have mentioned, is activated by holding down or in, the cruise control button for about 5 seconds or so, until the classic cruise control symbol appears in the dash screen. This works as class cruise control and to me, is WAY better that the stupid adaptive cruise control. The problem with just "turning off" the PCS system, as again, others pointed out, is that the PCS OFF light will illuminate in the dash, which is very annoying. To completely disable it entirely, from what I see all over tacomaworld, means that if you want to reenable it, you have to take it to the dealer and they will charge you a couple hundred dollars to do it. Again, I have not personally confirmed this, but it has been said enough times on Tacomaworld, that I do believe it to be true.

The out of the box adaptive cruise control is pretty awful. The OVTune 2.0 helps make it much less violent and actually usable. But this is good to know about the holding button mode as well.

I don't have issues with mine, I have to really be flying up on a stopped vehicle for it to brake. As far as the cruise is concerned, in good weather I used the closest setting and it works good,, yeah a little annoying when someone chops out in front of you, but that is a result of their doing. Like @Rock Lobster mentioned, after you use it for a while, you'll start to realize you were the tailgater.

Are we really talking about the PCS or the adaptive cruise control? Two different things. Regardless, I like both...you just need to understand why and how they work. Last week my PCS warning went off for a split second for the first time, and it was my fault. I had just looked away and the car in front of me decided (without any warning or turn signal) to make a quick turn into a parking lot, braking hard to do so. I don't think there would have been an accident, but the warning quickly got my attention so that I could brake quickly. Why anyone would want to disable this system not understandable....plus if your insurance finds out your rates will go up.

    lmao, no.

your rates will not go up if you turn that off anymore than if you turn off stability control, lane departure warning, BSM, put a tune on the truck, decide not to turn your wipers on when it's lightly raining, decide not to wear your seatbelt, etc.
