Good eye. It’s been raining nonstop for the last 2 days, so it’s up. I’m just up here to drink and relax on the beach for the week (my 19th was yesterday), but I figured I’d go for a little hike today.

I’ve not done one on this Truck but look for one ASAP. My wingers 3rd Gen. unit went out last year & it was a bear for him to find one.

So I did a bit of digging. The OEM block heater shows $400+ on Toyota's web site. I ordered Philips P/N 3100129. This guy claims it fits 3rd gen, but the manufacturer doesn't include it in its application list. I'll risk it for the price. Install video of similar-looking one on eTrailer:

Connect the cord to an outdoor timer so it runs 3 hours or so before you start the truck in the morning.

I plan to splice the power cord together with an onboard battery tender (something like a Schumacher SC1300). Total current draw will be only 5 amps, so it won't even need heavy-gauge wiring.

was also doing digging earlier and found the same thing. yeah that "cigarette" style heater goes and clips into the rear of the block under the piston. Was talking to Tyler earlier and he mentioned that Toyota took the mechanics and gaver em a run down as to how to "correctly" install them (ADD THERMAL GREASE) to avoid them burning up and setting fire to the truck. Basically the cigarette style heater is just that, a glorified cigarette plug/ glow plug that lets the heat transfer from itself into the block and warms things up.

However i'll be going with an alternate style. Much like what Honda/ Subaru does. Basically these hook up to your radiator and warm up the Coolant, which in turn heats up the engine (through the coolant ports).
there is another style i just started to look at and it goes in-line with the coolant hose and basically warms up through there.

IMO the cigarette style that Toyota has is kinda meh, since it only clips in, what exactly is stopping water and dirt from getting in while offroading. Better questions is what stops if from dislodging it from where it sits from the vibrations?

The hole in the block is apparently nestled in the water jacket, so the cartridge heater is heating the coolant too, but without an extra leak path. Yeah I'd lather it in antiseize to improve heat transfer and reduce corrosion.

Will be less than 2 lost toward the firewall.

At 0 deg trun the diff is 0"
At 90 deg turn the diff is 2" (not possible but exploring the limits, caster will add some but minimal. )
At 45 deg turn will be about 0.7*2" = 1.4

The amount extra the tire will move back will approximately be sin(steering angle) * spacer size. Would still add a few 16th for castor.

For what it's worth I have the factory one and it stopped working after a year or two. Haven't had the recall for it though
