The issue with the gm system is not up for debate, an intake valve that doesn't get cleaned by the passage of fuel WILL get excessive carbon buildup, it just what happens with direct injection. Here is fords problem, there are multiple recalls and the like on the eco boost motors.

    https://www.google.com/search?q=for...3IEHQBBBxQQ_AUoAHoECAEQAA&safe=active&ssui=on

And the jeep pentastar motors recall/ class action lawsuit.

    https://www.google.com/search?q=jee...KABAcABAQ&sclient=gws-wiz&safe=active&ssui=on

So its far more than one data point. There are no recalls on the 2gr-fks engine (one on the tundra twin turbo 3.5, forced induction for the win). Unless you want to point to the lack of data on the 3.5 and say that is reason for concern. It would seem to me though that the lack of recalls and lawsuits would indicate that the 3.5 is reliable with a low failure rate.

Other than Toyota there isn't (on a regular basis) any other's out there that sell with over 200,000-300,000 miles and people don't hesitate (except maybe for rust issues.) The resale on these things is incredible!

I agree. I doubt most buyers are aware of it though

What is your point here? People may not know the exact statistics and problems with other brands, but they do understand that Toyota is more reliable and the data supports this. So I'm really not sure what point you are making.

if The Riddler is still taking guesses, and "reliability" doesnt' count, I would say configurations and resale. You can get a 3rd gen taco in almost any config you want, and the only minor things missing would be a DCLB manual and a front locker. And resale is obviously a huge reason that people buy new Tacomas instead of a different brand.

My point is out of 250K buyers of Tacoma each year, very few know the competitor statistics on issues.

Not all DI only engines have carbon issues. The first gen 3.5 ecoboost doesn't have this issue and its DI only. You'll find a bunch of people saying its going to happen but never provide any examples. I can't speak for other engines but I researched this heavy on 3.5 since I had one.

I think it was resolved by a combo of better oils, gas and improved ecu logic.

How often do you see the "competitors" trucks for sale running great with 200,00-300,00 miles on them? The resale on Tacoma's is great for a reason. If these trucks aren't any different than the competitors why are there soo many aftermarket companies making custom parts for them? I don't care about the " competitor's statistics on issues"... recalls and resale says it all.

i would guess that the aftermarket and factory options are much more abundant with the Tacoma.

just look for Tacoma suspension, the options are damn near unlimited.

That is for damn sure, have owned Toyotas long before Tacoma World existed, the internet even. New crop of Toyota truck owners sure are a bunch of nit picky cry babies. Almost didn’t buy another Toyota this go around because of the dipshit whiny newbies, only stuck with Toyota it is what I know, and after 30 years why change now?

Old school guys didn’t care much about creature comforts, or power, or top speed. Just wanted a reliable vehicle to get them where they wanted to go.

I am talking old old skool…long before Tacomas. When they were fairly rare. Growing up in PA in the 70s-80s didn’t see too many Toyotas, wasn’t until I visited the West and California I saw a lot running around. It was one of those visits that turned me on to them. Used to get made fun of for driving “Jap Crap” from my Big 3 driving friends. “When are you going to get a real truck?” sort of thing.

Sure you would see the occasional modded truck, most were left stock. Now it seems like the other way around, if you don’t mod your truck, something is wrong with you. Hell, the running joke on here is joining is going to be hard your bank account. lol!

There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t see several Tacomas all Bro-Landered out. Used to only see heavily modded Toys in magazines. Had a dude ask me what I drove, told him…then he said so you have a roof top tent? Ummmm no…
