Not necessary at all. Do the 934 Tundra CV axle conversion. You can also use warfabs tie rod braces. Not hard to use a Tundra power steering reservoir to give you more fluid but doing the entire rack would be a headache and a half. There's already no room on a Tacoma for the steering rack it has

 

I have blasted them off at the pay 'n' spray in the past. Works well, but maybe not the most efficient method. I'll have to see if the pressure washer my Dad gave me will be sufficient after the shindig next weekend.

A stronger/larger rack and PS pump are honestly super overlooked when going bigger/heavier. The stock tacoma rack barely has the strength to turn the wheels under force at stock size, now once you go bigger you're gonna run into problems.

Either do a slide rack or a tundy rack, the slide rack doesn't fit on 3rd gens.

934s don't address the fact that neither the rack nor the pump can push the wheel through shit, the tierods just add glam and maintain the "fuse" of the steering. Frankly, I think most people go to 934s for the increase in CV degree movement rather than strength.

 

If your stock rack is struggling pushing stock tires around, sound like you need to replace it. Stock racks should have no issues pushing 33s around.

As far as replacing it with a Tundra rack..... Good luck. That is the tightest space for components on the entire damn truck. Even stock rack replacements are a royal pita

 

Have you upgraded to the tundra rack? I've seen the modifications that need to be down, but was it pretty straight forward?

Not true. Been in a few situations had a hard time turning 33's and my rack only has 21,000 miles on it.

That's just straight-up not true. The steering rack is a known weak point, even stock. As soon as you add weight [sprung OR unsprung] or need to start pushing offroad/offangle/out of the mall, it becomes more noticeable. The "bump steer" that we feel is because the pump is weak and shitty, and the steering rack is pretty small and weak at stock.

 

Yep, let me know how it goes. I'm looking to do this as well, but I think I want to do heimed tie rods -- just looking for a way to seal the ends with a boot at the rack end.

 

Not sure if I'll change the rack when going 35's or when the stock rack finally gives up. From the link you posted looks like another fun job laying on the floor with the plasma cutter......

 

FWIW I would also look at a new pump while you can. I'm going to swap to a Howe TC while I do it.

Also, Travis [Basikbiker] makes some racks and also had some neat plates he was designing to make it a bit easier to mark/fit the new rack in. Let me try to find a link. I know he got pretty displaced with some fires so I'm not sure if/when he's making things again.

Honestly, the hardest part is the steering shaft, IMO.

 

Hmmm. I've never had issues and I'm off road quite a bit. And I recently replaced a factory steering rack (part of a larger deal, rack was actually in good shape, shaft and all. Was just a bitch and a half to do) on a customer's truck at work. Good times.

If you're going to 35s, change the rack.
