On "righty tighty, lefty loosey," is it the top or the bottom? It's always the top. Don't overthink it and it won't be confusing.

if you look at it from the drive side only, they will both be lefty loosy, righty tighty from that perspective.

    learn something every day.

Also, I'm thinking a set of these for tossing them between vehicles.
Like the wife's car when we take it for thanksgiving since my cars manual and I plan on letting her drive some.

What about if you're in Australia? :stirthepot:

I have always used the concept of turning the wrench towards the bottom tube to loosen the pedals when the crank arm is aligned towards the front tire. When you pedal forward, you should in theory be working to tighten the pedals otherwise they could come loose.

For pedal threads just remember what way you pedal.

Theoretically your pedals tighten while riding. So just turn your wrench the direction you pedal on either side to tighten.

This way it makes no difference what side of the crank arm you're on, which way your wrench is oriented, etc.

Also... Don't crank them super tight. They really just need to be snug. Pedal wrenches are only long to pull off overtightend or seized pedals not to torque them down when installing.

I find this fairly comical. Everyone has their own 'easy ways to remember', and none of them make sense to the rest of us!

I love my Seasucker. One of the true universal racks. You can stick it to anything. The cups are super strong and each rack uses more cups than actually necessary. Super secure.

I don't use mine as much anymore because I have a hitch rack always on but I still use it if I'm pulling the trailer and use it a lot if I'm travelling and getting a rental car. I can toss it in my bike bag and fly with it no problem.

I originally bought it when I was not so well off financially. My wife and I would bounce from shitty car to shitty car. We would never consistently have a vehicle with a hitch, roof rack, or a vehicle that worked with a trunk rack. The Seasucker worked on everything.

I also would use it when I'd travel for work with a Sprinter van. You could attach it to the ceiling of the van to keep the bike up and out of the way of tools and materials while keeping it secure.

Ha. Depends on how your brain works I suppose.

I'll double down on my tip to not crank those pedals down so much though. When you take them off you should quickly know of you're turning it the wrong way if it doesn't come free immediately.

Exactly. But the concept that pedaling (forward) tightens the pedals, so turning in that direction to attach them, and the opposite to detach them, works best for me. But I still have to think about it, and I even worked in a bike shop assembling bikes for a while. Also, I only tighten finger tight, because further pedaling tends to tighten them. Usually.

Welp just closed a deal on pinkbike for an Ibis Ripley AF frame. The bike looked like it was in solid shape so should be good for a year or two. I’m thinking I’ll start ordering parts here soon. Im thinking I’ll try to find a used fox 34 either factory or performance elite depending on what I find a deal on. Other than that I’ve got some decisions to make! Shimano XT or Sram GX drivetrain?

Shimano, Sram, Hayes, or other brakes?! I’ll probably splurge a little bit on the brakes so what do you guys think? I’m like 225 plus gear so definitely 4 piston brakes.

If you want it built up quick, might be forced to SRAM. Shimano stuff seems hard to source. Personally, i like the Shimano shifter better, but think SRAM physically shifts smoother. I like the Shimano finger tip shifter specifically, i tend to upshift using my finger rather than have to use my thumb for up and downshifts.

i have 2 bikes with sram eagle. one is NX with GX shifter, other is full GX. only shimano stuff i have is for road bikes so no real comparison from me.

same with brakes. my code rsc have been pretty good. the lever and lever assembly broke on 2 different occasions, but they also took most of the force from the crash. replacing was easy enough once i could find just those parts and not a lever and caliper.

my guide Ts though, i wouldnt recommend.

I have GX axs on my gravel bike and I'm a big fan. I was a shimano fanboy for a while though and haven't gotten to try their 12 speed stuff yet. Good point about availability though, I haven't checked that yet.
He dropped it off at UPS today. I saw the sale but haven't seen any frame only options. I just wanted a decently priced frame to build up haha.
The Code RSC are the brakes I'm considering if I go Sram. Those seem to have decent reviews. But the Hayes Dominion A4 have what look like better reviews for about the same price. I feel like the "safe" route for me would be Shimano XT 4 pistons. I had the 2 pistons on a previous bike and currently have the Deore m6000 on another bike and I've never had issues with either of those.

How do you like the NX with GX shifter? Does it feel any better than NX for both? I did a post maintenance ride on the wife’s bike with NX both and was quickly reminded how I don’t like that feel. I would like to upgrade her but she would have a fit if I went X01 and honestly it would be overkill.

My vote for brakes are the trp dh evo’s. Lack the fine tuning of code rsc’s but get the job done really well.
