Totally off the subject…I truly apologize to the OP but what the heck happened to that truck in the pic! Seriously I can’t come up with a cause.

The AT filter in a 3G is just a wire mesh, it doesn’t require changing.

not always true, my 3.5at definitely had a real filter with paper or synthetic filter media in it. Not a screen that wouldn't get clogged, you definitely should drop the pan and see whats in there. This is the filter in my pan, you can see the not metal mesh filter media in it.

interesting. I guess I made the mistake of believing what I read on TW? I will have to do my own research. I will leave my 1st post up as a lesson to others.

Ya rock auto lists 2 filters and because of this place a bought the metal screen one, because everyone knows the the 3rd gens have a metal screen. I was quite upset when I got my pan off.

This was the one I incorrectly bought.

So is this whole “metal mesh screen” idea just fake news, or do some 3Gs actually just have a metal screen and some have a proper filter?

Rock auto lists the mesh filters for 2016s only, along side the proper filter. So my guess is that some of the early 2016s had the mesh filters for some reason and the rest have a proper filter, but those early 2016s established the "fact" that 3rd gens only had a mesh filter. Not really fake, but not completely true either.

So did they also go from a metal ‘filter’ housing on the 2016 to a plastic one thereafter?

Ya the new design is plastic. Would prefer a metal housing but the one I pulled had 90k on it and it didn't show any signs of distress.

I believe the intent of the comment was to recognize a drain only empties approximately 3 quarts of an 11 quart system. Refilling and cycling through the gears mixes the new fluid with that captured in the torque converter.

Yes, sort of. On mine at proper fluid level I only get 2.5 quarts out. However, when I did the "flush" I drained out the 2.5, put in 4, went through the gear shifting sequence, let cool, then drained added back another 4 quarts, repeat shifting sequence, drain, add in 4 quarts, shift, then "drained" while running about 1.5 quarts from fill cycle to get to proper level (at approx 105*).

p.s. My spill & fill sequence, drain about 2.5 quarts, add 4 quarts, do gear shifting.... let cool a bit then get to proper level, draining about 1.5 quarts.
