Self induced stupidity sums it up well in my case..mostly because I made a conscious choice to ingest so much alcohol I did dumb things.

Most of my dumbassery from those days was driving home when I shouldn't have..not as in maybe one more than I ought to. I did get in a few bar fights as well. Never lost a bar fight..sometimes I walked away better than others but I always made sure to give out more of an ass whipping than I received.

To be fair I can honestly say I never got in a bar fight drunk I wouldn't have while sober. One example was a few of us (5-6 guys and one lady who was someone's girlfriend) were out, one person bumped into her. She said "excuse you?" to which he said "fuck you bitch". She told him to do the same..I saw his hand start to rise and it was on. Her boyfriend and I were the same distance but I beat him to the punch literally. The boyfriend is about 6 foot 4 to my 5 foot 10 and was a moose, guy had played football at Notre Dame less than 5 years prior. I was about 300 pounds and not physically fit but just had that intangible which enabled me to put the offender against the wall by the throat with my left hand (to the point he was a couple inches off the ground) while beating the hell out of his face with the right hand. I'm sure I at least broke his nose because there was blood in a decent amount. Ends up the guy and his 2 friends are escorted out..as they had to help him to the car. I go to pick up my beer and the bartender's hand goes on top of mine telling me we need to talk. I said okay that's cool, what happened to your eye (which was swelling up)? He said "you did..I tried to get you off him and you elbowed me full force. I'll serve you a soda but you're shut off for the night".

Fortunately he understood the situation plus I was a regular at this place so no lasting issues.

I worked at a bar and resistor while in school.
I was there when they transitioned to plastic beer mugs.

There was a reason, I saw first hand what heavy glass beer mug can do when it gets smash against a skull. Blood, lots of blood.

Originally a thread called Just lost someone I consider a second father...

My friend Jim was diagnosed with what could be considered "nonsmokers lung cancer". Yesterday morning, he went in for surgery to have it removed, and the surgery was a success, only taking an hour and a half.

After surgery, he apparently developed blood clots in his heart or something, and despite the best efforts of the doctors, they could not get his heart going and he bled to death. He was 75, and aside from the obvious issue I just mentioned above, he was very healthy for his age.

I have been friends with him and his wife Helen since 2012, I was just at their house on Monday. Jim bought me the zombie patch for my collection, and Helen wanted him to wait for Christmas, but he insisted on giving it to me the next time they saw me so I could put it on the headliner before October.

Anyway, my relationship with Jim and Helen is such that I could basically show up whenever I wanted and hang out with them on the back porch. The procedure was so minor that he went in for surgery on Thursday morning and was expected to be back home by Monday or Tuesday at the very latest. He even drove himself to the hospital for the procedure, and his Ridgeline is still sitting in the parking garage at the hospital.

I went by their house today and saw Helen's son's Tacoma in the driveway next to Helen's Corvette, with the Ridgeline nowhere to be found. It's only Friday, so this didn't shock me. I pulled into the driveway and went to the back door. I knocked on the back door and Helen answered; I knew something wasn't right.

She told me to come in, and that she had some bad news. I figured it out right then and there and asked "Did Jim die?" She nodded and started crying.

I stood there at the back door in absolute shock for a few seconds, then I broke down and started crying too as I grabbed Helen in a big hug.

I initially didn't think I was in an emotional state to drive back home, so I called my mom still in tears and told her what happened. My parents drove out to come get me, but by the time they got there I was feeling much better and we all ended up chatting on the back patio for well over an hour. My dad met Jim twice, and my mom only met him once. Neither of them had met Helen prior to Jim's untimely death.

Jim took me shooting for the first time, and on one occasion picked me up at my friend's 4th of July party and drove me home when I was too drunk to do so.

I spent hours with Jim and Helen on their back patio, chatting and eating. Sometimes Porter would come too, and he loves their backyard because it has so many places to explore.

Jim and Helen were going to take their Corvette to the big show in Carlisle at the end of this month, and I was going to meet them there on Saturday. It goes without saying that Helen is in no mood to go there by herself because it's not the same without Jim, and I don't want to go either for the same reason.

This is especially shocking because I was literally shooting the shit with Jim on his back patio five days ago, and it still hasn't quite hit home that he is never coming back.

Sorry for your loss, Brother. Life is precious and fragile.
Every moment is a snapshot in time. Enjoy the good ones, endure the bad ones because they too, will pass.
    So sorry for your loss.

Jim gave me this patch five days before his passing, and it will be forever cherished for that very reason...

I am sad to say that these are the closest things to pictures of Jim and me that I am aware of at the moment. These were all taken by his wife Helen in January 2021, when I was helping Jim reinstall a light a light fixture in their 19th century home...

Not having pictures sucks, but memories are so much more important and significant. And it sounds like you've got a lot of those.

This picture was taken by Jim the first time he took me shooting back in September 2020; I fired three different handguns that day, and I not entirely sure which one I am shooting here...

Jim helped me change the spark plugs in my Tacoma last October, so I plan on keeping these spark plugs for sentimental reasons once it's time to replace them...

If they're that sentimental to you that they're worth keeping, maybe consider casting them in some resin and make em into a tributary artpiece.
