This guy operates a salvage shop and has a youtube channel where he tears down a different motor each week....usually due to abuse or neglect.
He's also a big fan of Toyota 4Runners, etc.
This video is the teardown of a 3.4 5VZ that aired about two weeks ago.

I watched this the other day. Gives me more confidence if I ever have to replace HG or something else internal. Doesn’t look hard, just a lot of stuff to take off.

Yeah, I've watched the video about 3x. I'm still not sure what killed that one, but it was definitely catastrophic. I thought maybe it dropped a valve, etc., but it was all fine.

Just saw this the other day and it got me thinking if the rods/ bearings aren't the weak link in these "last forever" motors?!?!?!

Seen other youtubes "what's this noise" on 4runners/ tacomas with the 3.4 rods knocking like a metal drummer.

My 2002's 3.4 just got the rod knock at 375k miles with otherwise zero issues (OEM head gaskets, in spec valves, clean cams, 210+psi compression in every cylinder!).

Haven't pulled it yet as i'm still looking for a replacement but once i do swap it i'll def be pulling the oil pan to take a peak.
