Nice hike with the Mrs. and my son and daughter today . Climbed a fire tower at the top of the mountain ! Quite the view

We have one here in Michaux State Forest that looks exactly like that one.
It's in sight of the Appalachian Trail on the crest of Snowy Mountain.

The one here is fenced off with no trespassing signs too.
There's a hole in the fence (I wonder how that happened)...
... and the state hasn't bothered fixing it.

Sooo... it's irresistable
I should take some pics next time we go for a hike there.
(Mrs Gritto refuses to go up of course).

Story Time With Gritto

Part One:

Back in the early seventies, a bunch of South Mountain boys were drinking.
(South Mountain is a village on top of the main ridge).

For some reason, they decided to dynamite a fire tower that night.
There were more towers around back then.

Well, they found out that it's not so easy to bring down one of those things.
Despite the fact that they placed dynamite on each leg.
These guys weren't exactly combat engineers or demolition experts.

Not surprisingly, some hikers camping on Chimney Rocks reported seeing and hearing the commotion.
There was a brief investigation (everybody in South Mountain knew who dunnit).
They got some hefty fines, and I think a couple of those boys joined the Navy.
Back then, judges often reduced or suspended sentences for rowdy boys if they joined the service.
Seriously.


Part Two:

A buddy of mine (a couple years older than me) went that route and ended up in the Navy.
He was on the carrier USS America for the Linebacker II Operation (Christmas bombing of Hanoi).

He was a Gunners Mate, so he was often above deck for underway refueling operations from fleet oilers, etc.
They went through the edge of a typhoon once.
He said you could see the deck flex up and down if you lay down on the deck.

They crossed the equator a few times and he graduated from being a Scalawag to Royal Shellback...

Got a laminated Royal Shellback card to prove it, so he didn't have to crawl through garbage or get his ass paddled a second time.

He got thrown in the Brig once for some weed.
(Weed was why he was in in the Navy in the first place).
The Gyrenes there were not kind to him.
They made him do "Gorilla Jumps" several times a day.
That's where you bend over and slam your fists into your chest, and jump, while making Gorilla sounds.

You did that until the Gyrenes got tired of that form of entertainment.
It was...unwise to refuse to comply.
