With the belt off, spin the pulleys, see if you can find one that fells crunchy. Did you change the water pump with the serp belt? If not you might want to start there, at 100k its good preventive maintenance to change it anyway and get some fresh coolant in it.

All of the pulleys felt really good when I spun them by hand, I figured I’d hear the noise at idle too if they were bad, it’s weird that I only hear the noise between 2.5k-3k. Changed the coolant once but haven’t touched the water pump yet, that’s a good idea.

sounds like one of the accessories ran off the belt. maybe a pulley or alternator. next step would be to check each pulley with a stethoscope while you have someone rev up the engine for you. other than that, it's a guessing game.

Have you ever replaced an idler pulley before?
If you change one change them all.

They sell a kit that has all of them and a belt as well.
In our service vehicles the mechanic installs the full kit when one goes out.

Haven’t replaced any yet. They seem to be in good condition but since I’m past 100k and dealing with this issue, I’ll probably just do them to eliminate another variable. Always makes sense to replace similar components of the same age, especially when we are using the trucks in remote areas! Appreciate the heads up on the kit!

I suggest turning the engine off if you don’t want to hear any noises.

If it is a belt/pulley deal.

    Here is the belt train.
This stuff is expensive bought separately.
Find a OEM kit at your local dealer if you can but sometimes aftermarket will just have to do.

Sounds like an idler pulley. Mine has begun to squeak when first start up, gonna do belt first to see if that fixes it.

Ever find the cause of the issue? My truck has been doing something similar.

You know, I didn’t. It ended up going away but I’d be willing to bet it’s one of the pulleys. Probably going to replace all of mine soon, at about ~140k now.

It was the cooling fan clutch, replaced and no noise remains!
