Every year on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, I find myself wondering if the people on the planes that hit the twin towers felt any pain, and today I asked my parents if they believed Jim felt any pain...

My parents don't think that Jim, or the passengers on the hijacked flights, felt any pain.

I've come to terms with the actual death, but not the fact that we no longer be scarfing pretzels on his back patio or going shooting anymore, and then there's the huge Corvette show in Carlisle at the end of this month that both myself and his widow can't bring ourselves to attend.

I don't know if you read the whole story, but this is the guy who took me shooting for the first time; I plan on buying one of his guns and his wife is fine with this.

Also, one of his guns is a new .22 Glock pistol that he just bought. I have a feeling that his kids will want the higher caliber weapons, and more than anything I want a gun with relatively cheap ammo that I can take to the range and practice with. He also has a 9mm Walther, a 9mm Stribog, and a .357 Taurus revolver. I've never fired the Taurus, but he told me it's a wrist killer and not particularly fun to shoot...

I think you should buy a Ruger MKIV or Browning Buckmark in memory of your friend.
    I think you’ll like those 2 better.

Let the family choose what they want to do with his belongings.
Sometimes, people can get emotional over things.

So, Helen is 78 and a bit technologically challenged, among other things; I'm gonna have to go to the wireless store and help her cancel Jim's cell phone. She also has no idea how to transfer important contacts from Jim's phone to hers, and she's requested my help with that; I have feeling that I'm going to be helping her get a lot of stuff in order and won't have much time to mourn.

Charlie, I’m sorry to hear about Jim’s passing. Friends like that are gold.

Your stories of him remind me of my “adopted grandpa” from my teenage years. Not handy in the least bit, but man, did we catch trout together. He’s been gone over 10 years now.

I think Helen wants me to have a gun...

There's also bunch of various mementos of Jim's that I'm getting.

Do you think to Jim, it's as if he just never woke up? What happens to someone's mind after they die is something that has always bugged me, especially under circumstances like this...

With the people I've lost, especially my grandfather, I hope it's the case where they are just in a dream. A happy dream that doesn't end but just changes as it goes. What happens to the minds of those of us still around to feel grief is, in my opinion, what weighs on me more.

I hope he is eternally 25 years old and cruising around heaven in the Porsche 356 he used to own...

Then that's where he is. I like to imagine my grandfather and I still walking across that bridge in the town of 1500 he lived in, throwing rocks and picking fresh blackberries. I won't say the grief fully goes away, but talking and living like they would want you to is how to go.
