Can any of you guys identify what kind of contactor/solenoid/relays are being used here? I'm trying to find replacements for the buses, they are what control the six e-fans for the Cummins ISX buses. We use a flawed design on the other buses which use only those cylindrical solenoids and they always fail, this setup has never failed so we want to re-create it.

Yikes sorry to hear that. Just be there for her even if that means being a punching bag. Best to have her see a therapist asap. It helped us when my wife lost her sister a couple months ago.

Yeah it’s a mystery. No part numbers on it either. Could you tell me what the difference between a contactor and a solenoid is? They seem like they do the same thing.

Contactor uses an electro magnetic coil to close contacts. Solenoid uses a coil to open/close a valve, or move an actuator.

What separates a relay from a contractor then.... Just the amperage?

Kinda looks like an open frame power relay. Have you taken one out and looked at the sides? Might be some numbers hidden

    something like this:

Generally, yes. In controls we use contactors for motor loads, relays for control loads.

Though they do make beefed up relays that look just like contactors and can handle a bit more load.

Are you guys playing with solid state relays yet in your control stuff? We have them for high speed applications like trans brake control and nitrous control.

What voltage is the controls? And are you trying to stage fans on? If so how? On temp?

Interesting. I think that could be what it is.

I’ll have to try to pull it off before it leaves in the morning. That specific bus always goes out everyday on the account of being extremely reliable.

Its rare, but we do use them for stuff that switches often or needs to be more noise tolerant.

For example, we had a machine at my last job that turned on a glue solenoid every time a piece of cardboard went under a sensor. Do that 15000 times a day and youll burn up a relay in no time. SSR was the way to go.

    24vDC.

If you could help me with a design that would be great. Currently the fans receive the trigger signal to turn on at 100% speed when the alternator is on (engine on) and it KILLS the fans because the drivers just let the buses idle all day. We wanted to do a setup where it changes with engine temperature like a car would.
