No offense to bmgreene, but felt is not what you want! It will eventually wear through, start rattling, and you will have to remove everything and do it again. Do it right the first time, need to use a rubber gasket of some sort. The horn is unnecessary, ideal approach is to have the pipe in the cowl end above the hvac intake. That way if the cowl floods, the water will enter the hvac intake WAY before the engine intake

    Example...

Has anyone drilled holes under/around the intake so water would just drip out before being sucked up?

I see the point of cutting the intake like that to avoid pooled water. It also looks like a big scoop for anything that would drip though.

That would alow water to drain into the interior

Honestly, with the elbow on the intake like I have, putting it above the hvac, as well as the additional holes cut in the sides of the cowl, its almost impossible for water to get into the motor. I've done several river crossings with the water coming over the hood for about 10 seconds without so much as a hiccup

Ive been meaning to do this. Is it pretty obvious where to drill? Or best to put the elbow on and kinda mock it up first?
Looks like it kinda certers on the cabin air intake

For the holes in the cowl side walls, its pretty obvious where to drill. For the elbow on the intake, I bought a 45 deg elbow, put it on the end of the pipe, then drew a line where to cut. If left at 45 deg, its too close the under side of the cowl cover

Also, I was able to find a 12” silicone tube, so I’m going to try this again. I’ll post pics when I dig into it for some pointers from everyone.

The 90 degree is for the turn from the air filter to attach the straight pipe that goes through the fire wall. The one im talking about is at the end of the pipe inside the cowl. As far as i know, no one else has done this. It just adds a little more protection from water getting into the intake should the cowl flood

I tried finding the pics but couldn’t. Looks clean.

mine was getting hung up on that thing with all the metal tube things. No idea what that is. Seems like other peoples are clearing it and you don’t even have one.

there's already holes in the ends of the cowl at the fenders where it drains from factory. It'll never get flooded unless you're up shit creek with water over the hood. Even in a heavy downpour the water lines inside my cowl were never more than like 1/8th".

also for anyone who thinks this will ruin your engine. I have a hole in my gutter right above where I park my truck. It was pouring and the gutter was dumping water directly on my cowl. Truck started and drove no issue and my filter was bone dry.

That is part of the ABS system, mine is on the other side. You should be able to clear the lines if you route the pipe just right

I'm 5+ years in with no issues so far. The felt I used is heavy "furniture felt", which Home Depot sells in small sheets with adhesive backing; it's about 3/16" thick and takes 4-5 passes with a razor knife to cut it to size since it's got so many layers of overlapping fibers running in all directions. The number of pieces and locations I stuck it have everything wedged together tight enough that nothing moves around significantly, and there's not likely to be the kind of sawing motion that would be needed to eventually wear through the pads. I was actually more worried about the sharp edged on the hole pushing through the kinds of rubber seal material that I was able to find - mostly foam rubber weather stripping, nothing like a good solid gasket.

My alternate plan was just to wrap enough layers of duct tape over the end to make it fit tight inside the hole, but it would have been dozens of tedious fit-checks to keep putting it back in and out then putting the intake horn in and out every time, plus I couldn't figure a way to allow for the hose clamp holding the horn in and there isn't room to run that hose in from the back side.

If I only had the silicone hose at the bulkhead/firewall I probably wouldn't have even bothered with the felt because I wouldn't have heard the rattle caused by the aluminum intake horn that I used contacting the edge of the hole.

you think just running the silicone through the firewall with no edging is okay? That would be awesome for me if I could do that. What about then putting a bead of silicone around it?
