I just picked up a 2022 SR5 - still trying to determine whether I have premium audio, or not... can't find any information anywhere to determine what is actually installed. Was not made aware of any upcharge for the nav system at time of vehicle purchase/pickup, but then I guess i am not altogether surprised. Anyone any idea of cost of getting the nav system up and running?

I believe that if you have the Nav system it is already activated for 3 years. If you do not see that, you do not have the Nav, which means no premium audio which also has an 8" screen rather than 7" screen.

I do have the 8" screen... it seems to have all of the buttons for the nav but the nav comes up with an app not installed when I try to go to it. Looked for app on toyota's website, but unable to find it, I assume I just load onto a memory stick from my pc and put it in the usb port in the truck... Tried the dealer I purchased the truck from to see if there is a way to add the nav, but they have been totally unresponsive so far.

If you are concerned about sound at all then keep the head unit and add aftermarket speakers amps and sub. Massively better than anything from the factory. Huge difference. Not just loud but even at low volume you will hear parts of songs that you did not even know were there. I guarantee you will be happy you did. TOTALLY 110% worth it. Game changer.
    After recommendations I put:
    Kept Stock head unit
Kicker KS components in the front
Kicker KS 2 way rear door speakers
Kicker Key 200 smart amp for the highs
From Craigslist: JL audio 10” shallow sub put in a box I built myself with a Kenwood 300 watt sub amp

The Nav is garbage. Use Google Maps. To the minute updates on quickest routes with alternate routes to avoid traffic.

I have a 2021 with a non-JBL unit and the sticker labeled it "Premium Audio, Dynamic Navigation with 3-Year Trial" (package EE). I know a lot of people don't like the on-board nav in these trucks but I've been quite happy with the dynamic nav. The routing is always accurate, maps are always current because it's cloud based, and the traffic alerts have been accurate. I prefer on-board nav to google maps, etc. off my phone. Once the trial is over in just under 2 years I will continue the subscription. To me it's either that or pay to keep the maps updated on the non cloud-based nav. Just my opinion, YMMV.

Thanks for the correction, I didn't think I had the distinction down. Must be the "Premium Plus" or something that gets the JBL speakers.

I hear what you are saying about the NAV, but the AndroidAuto | Apple CarPlay is worth your time if you want to be able to dictate short text messages and send them via voice, have text messages read to you when they arrive, listen to Pandora, Spotify or TuneIn, or Podcasts, or you have music content on your phone. Of course you could listen to this content via Bluetooth connection only.

Does your NAV provide transient road construction or speed trap information? Waze is another great navigation tool to run which does.

Now that I have the Motorola MA module, I should be able with Wireless AndroidAuto to just toss my phone on the charging pad, and not bother with a wire to the headset. It should just launch as it does in my Outback, but we'll see when I get the truck.

Of course, you don't need to use AA or ACP for navigation - you can use both your built-in NAV and the other technology for different purposes.

Did you add an amplifier? If you tried it, how was the sound quality by just replacing the speakers?

It does provide delay information (accident, construction, etc.) and suggests an alternate route if the delay will make another route faster. It does not do speed traps. I had a Rav4 XLE Hybrid before the truck that had no on-board nav and I used ACP. Drove me nuts lol.

True, sometimes it seems like more and more, we are serving the technology rather than the technology serving us... I just got used to it honestly. Sometimes it infuriates me. My wife totally avoids it.

I did and 100% completely think it’s worth it. Did not try it with just changing the speakers. A lot of people have done this kicker CS set up to just change the speakers. To me, you get real difference when you add an amp to the highs. The head units are just so under powered.

    I added
Kicker Key 200 smart amp for the highs
Kenwood 300 watt amp for the sub

Nice. thanks for directing me to the other thread as well.
So is it the Subaru tweeters that you are using???

OK, well I know I don't have to do everything up-front. I can slowly replace speaker sets. Looks like most think the OEM tweeters are of poor quality.

One thing for me - it is not the volume of the bass that adds to my enjoyment as much as it is the sonic field, or channel separation. I never had a lot of power in my Accord, or my Corolla, or my Jetta, or any of the cars I owned. My wife had an A4 before I broke the timing chain, and that had a better audio system in it, but again, to me, it is the sound placement and L/R, F/R separation and balance that I'm interested in. This is a truck with noisy tires and probably a noisy engine. I'm not going to try to fight fire with fire, and I'm definitely (no criticism here) NOT going to bump up the low-frequencies. Repetitive exposure to that, and one will compromise your hearing later in life. Even more important to that, for me, I want to maintain situational awareness of the road, driving conditions, emergency vehicles, and condition of the vehicle, and besides one's touch, and one's sight, one's hearing is VERY important to engagement in driving. YMMV.

You've given me lot's of good ideas. One more question: did you purchase your items through Crutchfield?

None to speak of, just enjoying it for the moment.
Did you read the window sticker? Might want to start there...

Yup, OEM Tweeters are terrible. Bought the highs setup from a shop. Sub setup from craigslist.

So, I'm currently awaiting a 2023 Off-Road. Originally, I was looking at the Off-Road Premium package for the JBL system. However, everything I'm reading seems to indicate that this system is not great for most audio junkies. I'm coming from a BMW with a Harmon/Kardon system that is simply amazing and I'm deeply concerned that I will be very disappointed in the JBL setup that comes with the premium package. Everything I've read here and in other places conclude that my money is better spent upgrading the stock system in the non-premium package myself.

My question here is this: Should I get the Premium Audio Package (non-JBL) for the upgraded head unit? I lean yes.

Right now, after all the reading I've done, I like the idea of just adding all the kicker components you listed above plus maybe replacing the stock tweeters with the Subaru factory replacements as opposed to paying up for the Premium Off-Road package. The Audio upgrade was the only thing largely important to me with the Premium package.

If it is simply for the audio, it is not worth the $ for the Premium JBL system. I got it for the leather, tech, sunroof, etc. so it was worth it to me.
If it solely about the audio, you can do far better aftermarket for sure. The JBL system is meh. It sounds OK, but won’t be turning any heads.

I’m shopping for the best “replacement speakers only” option for a 2022 premium with all JBL, I don’t mind cutting to get a hood two way mid/high in the dash. just looking for best suggestions for doors and sun.

    Any suggestions?

Also, without pulling the speakers myself out to check, is it true that the rear door speakers are 4 ohm instead of 2 like the rest of the system. I’ve read that a few times now.

    Thanks all
