Yikes, What year is the truck and why so many failures? My 2020 with 23,000miles is making this exact noise. It comes and goes. Dealership tech saw the video I took and concludes it is the throw out bearing but of course they could not replicate the noise so cannot cover under warranty until they can. It came back but is gone again.

you've got an aftermarket clutch right? Wonder if that has anything to do with it.

    this is partly a custom deal. 2017 6MT 4x4
URD Stg2 clutch. resurfaced OEM flywheel. OEM TOB. FJ pedal assembly.

there was drama with the clutch install, so it got complicated a bit with pressure plate bolts from URD not torqued correctly, a faulty TOB replacement at that install, and a failed wave ring spacer (never got the actual part name) in the clutch that URD replaced for the second go-round and TOB #3.

then TOB #3 failed and i had to do all that again.

it appeared to then happen all over again, but seemed to be that the replaced wave ring spacer has a break-in period and creates symptoms during that phase that look like a TOB failing. so i'm not actually sure i needed to replace TOB #3 with #4, but i did.

since then i've put maybe 35k on it and it performs excellent, although at times there may be inconsistent noises, like at cold start for a minute only, on an incline, in cold temps, but nothing consistent. last week the small & minor noises took a turn and then the clutch pedal has lost its feel and shifting is inconsistent and hard to get right with my left foot all over the place trying to figure it out. but the clutch itself holds like it should, no issues with its performance whatsoever. how much do i wish we had TOB options for this thing.

Advice requested. I’m 12 hours into a 16 hour drive with freshwater fish. First 10 hours were smooth sailing. Last 40 minutes I’ve noticed it takes significant force to shift out of a gear but it’s easy to get into the target gear. Is this perhaps fluid problems? It was pretty hot today. But it’s been many months since I changed MT fluid, though this is the most significant drive since I did that.

Eh, maybe. What fluid do you have in there?

Ugh, I've had that in my 85 4runner way back...wanna say it was a TOB but cannot fully compare with 3rd gen Taco obviously...this was in 1992

What i do recall is it goes downhill fast...real fast

If you are starting to hear a ticking sound at idle that goes away when you depress the clutch, that is a classic symptom of a TOB that is on its way out. That could be your problem. Perhaps try marine fish next time? :)

So TOB problems, risk of blowing my transmission? Or is it just a TOB replacement and no further damage to other parts? And root cause would be I f’d up the fluid or something else unrelated? My truck had one PO for the first 4 years and 40k of its life so not sure how it was treated.

There was a TSB or Recall on 2016's for sticking in gear after a highway drive, there is a little ball bearing that needs swapped out if memory serves me.

for what it's worth, i had the same symptom at the end of the Amsoil's life a change or two ago. but i also had a sticky 3rd gear, hard to get into.

I’m mostly asking if I can continue the drive and then take it to a dealer or if it’s best to abort and tow it 250 miles (yikes)

I would keep going until a problem comes up. I don’t see a reason to stop as is.

Does this sound like your issue?
    https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2016/SB-10084376-5448.pdf

I’m no expert but it seems like the fix to the detent ball is external to the trans so even if it failed completely it wouldn’t eject fluid or drop metal into the trans. In fact it might make shifting easier. Worst case might be jamming up and unable to shift at all, creating a hazardous situation. But again, you should do what seems right for you.

Thanks so much everyone. I’ll read the TSB tonight. I feel plenty safe driving but just don’t want to blow up an otherwise good transmission. Right now it doesn’t feel like that’s a risk based on how it’s moving. I really appreciate the advice.

I'd soldier on...just mind the sore points on what gears and shift around them if you can. Issue is if you get stuck in a single gear, you're either pooched or Rev limiting home.

    What gear(s) is getting stuck?

It wasn’t so much stuck as it was sticky. But stopping to pee “fixed” things for now. Sticky in 4th, 5th and 6th.

Perhaps relevant that I mis shifted to second instead of 4th on a hill but corrected as fast as I could, once the synchros wound up higher than expected.

It he does seem like it’s back a bit from 6th to 5th. And also 5th back to 6th. Seems like extended highway driving at speed with hills is the trigger.

Also worth noting, for completeness, I did not pee in my transmission, I stopped at a rest stop and power cycled the ignition.
