i'm a millennial that works mechanical stuff, and can drive stick. i was getting phased out before i was born. wage cuts, layoff's, everything costs more no one pays more, the planet's dying, no one wants to hire without 2 decades of experience in fields that didn't exist a decade ago, HR dept's that have overly strict hiring requirements with no concept of the job they're hiring for, so no applicants make it past. in all honesty, i'm not entirely sure i want to live past 50

Damn, I thought I had a pessimistic outlook..

I think I’m good to go around 75. Don’t want to be a burden to anyone or end up in a nursing home.

    @RustyGreen , 75% at retirement….

    Good morning everyone :hattip:

Thanks @My Name is Rahl for giving me the name of how I feel on Sunday afternoons…

No worries, with this outlook, you won't ... life, and how you look at it, is a choice ... yours to make. Choose wisely.

Well, that is an interesting point of view... I choose to read the current employment situation entirely differently.

Everywhere I go employers are looking for workers for what seems to be every level -- many literally begging for them with very relaxed hiring standards, high wages, sign on bonuses, flexible schedules, part time hours and paid training.

I am actually envious of (and truthfully more than a bit enraged with) modern young people.

I remember going from business to business just about groveling with managers for a chance to get in -- any job, any hours, any pay -- just a chance to prove myself worthy of employment. I wasn't unique, if a good place was hiring 5 people there were 1000 applicants just like me.

After they had concluded pulverizing you during the interview they all said the same thing like they were reading off a card:
"I'd really like to hire you son, but I can't afford to train anybody, you get some experience and come back and I'll give you a job".

So finally someone offers you a job: "We will start you out a $xx and see how you do, then we will raise you up."
    Yeah, right.
Raises & promotions, there were 15 other guys competing for that $.20 promotion/raise.
Nobody helped the new guy, he was the competition.

There was no such thing as flex time, part time or a family friendly schedule -- if you were late or missed time during your probation period (up to 6 months) unless you were in the hospital you just lost your job -- again there were 999 guys wanting to replace you.

With a decent job now you can go grovel at a bank for a small loan to try to build some credit.

With all that done now you want to buy a house -- at a double digit interest rate and with 20% down -- if you work days you will need to use vacation time to do all the banking and insurance paperwork, put in your request 2 weeks in advance, a month would be better...

    -----------------------

If anyone took the time to read this far, I feel young folks today have unprecedented opportunities to get ahead. The competition for jobs I spoke about above is gone, to simply show up on time makes one stand out now.

If a young man today has a bit of intelligence and a willingness to work there are plenty of opportunities -- and from a tactical viewpoint, the competition doesn't have much horsepower it seems.

Many youngsters today seem to want at walk around wearing dark clothes, dragging their feet, staring at the ground (or their phone) saying "...woe is me, what is the point of life..."

and they ain't got a :censored: clue about what hard times are.

My brother used to design and install those shades. Said he used to use a series of loops in the rope to tension the shade, got one so tight it snapped off a 4x4 once!

    Damn straight!
We make our own lot in life -- our successes, failures, happiness or sadness are exclusively in our control.
