Last 2 sun roofs I owned sprung a leak at one point or another. One of them was a very expensive repair.

I live in OR where it rains 300 days a year and those drains are pollen magnets

How old were those cars? Newer sunroofs typically are much more reliable. I would imagine a sunroof on tilt and the rear slider window open would allow for an awesome flow of fresh air into the cab without too much wind noise. But alas I have a SR. I bought this truck for my dog and off road adventures, but my next Tacoma will have a sunroof and the rear auto slider.

They were older but it was a big enough problem/inconvenience that I don't ever wanna experience that again. Lol

Moon roof is part of the premium interior package iirc. Which also included leather seats. And I have a 6 year old 100lb German shep and a 50lb 6mo old German shepherd. So leather seats I wanted to avoid completely as well. I wanted a dumbed down trd sport dcsb but none in my area had short bed, double cab, and non leather seats when I was looking. SR5 was next best option.

I totally understand. My first car, back in the 90s, was a POS Hyundai Excel. It was so bad in all things automotive that I would never own that brand again…despite how reliable they are now supposed to be. Luckily I’ve never had a bad experience with a sunroof.

SR's are blank white canvasses. That is their main feature imho; what they don't make you pay for. You are saving a lot of money on stuff you will not keep in the truck, and later replace with what you want...and then do it again. Wheels/tires, grilles, head/tail lights, lift/spacer kits, etc, etc. SR buyers that later customize and mod their trucks their way are smart fellas. I've seen some SR mods that look freaking awesome.

Being older (63) I didn't want a truck with a bunch of options that I will never use or even want not alone to pay so much extra money for.
The SR made the most sense for me. My biggest concern was I didn't want a truck with a mustache (unpainted bumpers). After months of searching, I finally found a red one with the appearance package.
Because of Tacoma world I was able to upgrade the truck with trim that guys were discarding while they were blacking theirs out.
I got the truck I really wanted. The truck Toyota never made but wish they did. Im very happy with 2017 SR.

    Well, that stinks.

My wife's 2017 Elantra came with a sunroof and we've had no issues.

Seems like the Quality Team missed the mark on your truck.

Heck, there was a third light issue going on at the beginning of the 3rd Gen introduction. (From what I've read on TW)

No issues with my third brake light. (Knock on wood)

Glad you got an acceptable truck and you are happy with it.

SR all the way. Starting in 2021, Toyota made them standard with TSS, a nice touch screen with apple car play, and a great number of other features. The SR has color matched bumpers and mirror caps, and an excellent grill that I’ve watched TRD owners swap to.

I built a 2021 SR with full Kings, Deavers, Total Chaos, 4.88 re-gear, Eaton E-locker, sliders, full aluminum skids, DD fog lights, etc for about what a base model TRD-OR goes for.

Coming soon: Compact powered sub install Future mods planned: bigger tires (265/75/16) BILLSTIEN 5100 lift
I'd keep looking for an SR5. I love my 2020 SR5 double cab short bed. I think for me the main things over the Sr was that the sr5 came with intermittent wipers, fog lights, the better tpms, 8" screen radio vs 7", power drivers seat and with the v6 in a double cab you got a power rear window.
I sometimes wish I would have got an access cab but I was giving other family members rides places much more then so the double cab made sense. Now that I'm not the longer bed would be great but I still love the truck regardless

I was really looking for a vehicle that had everything I needed with no extra fluff to break later or that I'd not use. My last vehicle was a Jeep Liberty CRD limited that had a full helping of options, leather, sunroof, cd changer, nav, xm radio, infinity speakers everything.
The sunroof leaked so many times thought I rarely opened it. The leather was hot or cold, although it was part vinyl not even all real leather didn't hold up well. The navigation eventually quit working and map dvds were $150 to update. Infinity speakers eventually wore out and couldn't be replaced for reasonable price.
So that's why I skipped all that with the sr5 package.
The Tacoma so far has been the best vehicle I've ever had.

Got the SR 4wd access cab for under 30k. Can’t complain. I love it. Daily driver but used for camping and not construction or hauling so the 4cyl is fine with me.

    Active, Retired, Reserves?

I've been out for a good while now, ran on the Polar Star from '94-'96, Sta Grays Harbor from '96-'98, then PSU 311 for a good while after that.

    Great times!!!
